Hi All,

We have decided to post more stuff that JWG lectured and wrote about in his long career. This will be one will be based on his teachings about aspects, planetary phases, and key planetary pairs. If you have any questions as you read through it please feel free to ask.

God Bless, Rad

ASPECTS, PHASES, AND KEY PLANETARY PAIRS

                                                            JEFFREY WOLF GREEN

                                                 ASPECTS AND PHASES

Aspects need to be looked at in context. For example, you can have four kinds of possible squares, but very few of the traditional books teach this. Aspects need to be looked at with respect to the phase relationship in which you find them. In my Pluto book the phases are intertwined in the interpretation of the aspects which are looked at from an evolutionary point of view, but they are not identified as such.

The essence of astrology is a circle from 0 to 360 degrees. A basic way of looking at life is a circle or cycle. There are a number of ways to divide this up depending upon the number quotients used to divide it. Using the number 6 or 12 or 3 or 9, you can create different answers with respect to the division of the circle. Houses are, for instance, a relatively new phenomena and not part of the origin of astrology per se. An excellent book on the history of astrology is called "The Origin of the Zodiac" by a man named Gleadow. Excellent.
We will be using the number 8 to determine the phases we use: the basic Lunation Cycle. This will give us two quadrants in the first half, and two in the second half. Each phase equals 45 degrees. (The Chaldean Zodiac is based on 28 days, or a lunation cycle, and is more complex; we are going to use a simpler method and learn 8 phases rather than 28.)

The degrees of separation between any two planets represents the phasal relationship between those two planets. The phase determines how the archetypal relationship between any two planets manifests. Aspects that occur within any given phase between two planets correlate to specific archetypes that have there meaning in the context of the phase that the aspect takes place within.

The phases correlate to the various archetypal dynamics within the consciousness of the Soul, and how it develops and evolves through time.  Aspects mark key turning points in that evolutionary development or journey. Look upon them as turnstiles, if you will. Like revolving doors. The aspect moves you from one developmental stage to another in an accelerated fashion. Looking at this revolving door the space on either side of it is relatively calm in comparison to the revolving door: two planets in a phase that are not in a specific aspect. One goes from a relatively calm and developed space or reality to another space or reality which is trying to be developed or evolved from where it currently is. The tension between past and future correlates to two planets in a phase that are is some kind of aspect.

In this class we will first talk about phases, then aspects, then key planetary pairings which are key archetypes in all human consciousness. For example, the Mars/Venus pair represents how we complete ourselves in relationships which is a primary archetype in all human beings. Then we will discuss key aspect patterns, T-squares, grand trines, etc.. Eventually you will be able to handle contradictory situations such as a grand trine which is also involved with a T-square, and so on.
                                                    The New Phase

The New phase correlates to a brand-new evolutionary intention reflected in the Souls desire to initiate a new way of being. This phase is instinctual and yang. It correlates with the need to initiate a diversity of experiences, to take action in order to begin the actualization of the new intention. The consequences of and reactions to the actions taken create the beginning of knowledge of what the new evolutionary intentions and requirements are. There is a desire to break free from the past cycle in this phase so that the experiences necessary to an awareness of what the new intention is about can occur. The fear of being absorbed by the past, or the previous cycle that precedes the New phase (the Balsamic phase) generates the desire for absolute freedom in order for independent actualization of this new evolutionary cycle.

Within the New phase, there are four aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

0ー Conjunction: The planets unite in function so that a new evolutionary purpose and cycle can begin in an instinctual way. The new cycle or purpose will be projected spontaneously, without any egocentric awareness. It is pure, unchecked expression or action. Random experiences will be initiated in order to begin the process of self-discovery in this new evolutionary phase.

30ー Semi-sextile:  The emergence or formation of a conscious and egocentric identification with the new evolutionary purpose or cycle. Random action narrows as the individual begins to sense specific directions or experiences that will allow realization or discovery of what the new evolutionary purpose or cycle is about.

40ー Novile: The conscious and egocentric awareness and identification of the new evolutionary purpose begins a gestation process wherein subjective growth toward the development or actualization of the new purpose begins by giving it personal or individual meaning. In other words, the individual becomes aware of moving in new directions, and that these new directions are highly personal in nature. The sense of self-discovery is heightened and the narrowing of random experiences continues.

45ー Semi-square: This is a transitional evolutionary gate or aspect that moves the evolutionary intention from the New to the Crescent phase. Whereas the New phase required all kinds of external activity, the Crescent phase requires a consolidation and internalization of experience. When the semi-square aspect is still applying within the New phase by orb, it creates a conflict between desiring yet more experiences, and the desire to slow down, consolidate, and internalize in order to create a structure in which the new discoveries can be integrated.

                                                The Crescent Phase

This is a yin phase wherein the evolutionary archetype is internalized, established, and oriented to creating personal or individual forms and structures that will allow for the new evolutionary intention to take root. This requires a personal effort, because the temptation or fear of sliding back into past patterns can also occur in this phase.

Within the Crescent phase, there are five aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

45ー Semi-square: As the evolutionary intention evolves from the New to Crescent phase, it begins to intensify. The Soul now struggles to establish and make real the purpose in an individual way. This intensity is due to the fact that the Soul is attempting to pull away from all past conditions that may bind it to an old order, pattern, or way of being.

51ー Septile: The Soul now associates the new evolutionary purpose or cycle with some form of personal or special destiny. Experiences and actions are initiated in order to realize or discover what this special purpose or destiny is. The action taken can be sporadic and confused, or clear and consistent, depending on the planets that are in this phase and aspect. Pluto/Uranus, for example, could produce sporadic action versus Sun/Pluto which could produce clear and consistent action. There is also the archetype of ‘fate’ to this aspect in the sense that the Soul will create contacts with key people or circumstances at critical moments that have the fated intention of keeping the person aligned with the evolutionary intention of this phase.

60ー Sextile: The process of consciously understanding the new evolutionary cycle and purpose occurs through contrast and comparison. The Soul must isolate itself from the impact of the external environment in order to realize and discover from within itself that which is uniquely new and individualistic. Action is now internalized as the Soul affects self-contemplation in contrast to focusing on the overall nature of external reality. The Soul can now understand the issues pertaining to the past, individually and collectively, and, in so doing, understand what experiences, methods, or skills to use to foster the development of the new evolutionary purpose in an individual way.

72ー Quintile: The Mars/Pluto quintile indicates the process of creative transformation through the internal individualization of the new evolutionary purpose. The meaning of the emerging evolutionary purpose becomes highly individualistic and specific. This new purpose is nearly ready for externalized action, although there is still something of a struggle because of the pull of the past.

90ー Square: This aspect creates a high degree of internalized compression within the Crescent Phase, and reflects a key evolutionary progression from the Crescent to First Quarter phase. The internalized compression within this phase induces an inner awareness of what the new individual structure or forms are that have become progressively refined through the preceding phases and aspects. These individual forms or structures reflect the initial evolutionary intention in the New phase. The First Quarter Phase will require the external actualization and integration of these new forms into the Soul's circumstantial reality.

This aspect also intensifies an unconscious fear of failure in which the Soul feels that it does not know how to establish these new structures or forms into the existing society. This in turn creates a fear or temptation to slide back into old patterns or structures. As a result of this, the square aspect within the Crescent phase creates an inner push/pull in which the Soul cyclically withdraws and remains apart from social interaction, and then asserts itself into social interaction in an effort to test and establish these new patterns, forms or structures.

                                               The First Quarter Phase

Dane Rudhyar called this phase a crisis in action.・This is quite true because this key evolutionary gate correlates to the need to establish and make real the new evolutionary patterns reflected in the original impulse in the New phase. The fear of failure and of sliding back into old patterns is now very intense. These fears create a crisis in which the Soul will attempt to try on many hats, so to speak, in an effort to discover just what hat most perfectly reflects the new patterns. These different hats reflect different directions and different ways of being that are highly individualistic. Which hat is it becomes the essence of the crisis.

Within the First Quarter phase, there are four aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

90ー First Quarter Square: The individual meaning of the new evolutionary purpose now must be given a new form to operate through in order to be fully actualized or established within the individual. The specific nature of the form is relative to the specific nature of the planets that are aspected in this way. For example, if Mercury is square Pluto the new form would involve a new system of intellectual organization and the resulting opinions. The new form would evolve by analysis of the intrinsic weaknesses or deficiencies in prevailing intellectual systems or bodies of knowledge. This analysis would produce the new intellectual insights.

If  the planet was Venus, then new forms of relationship or new ways of being in relationship would have to occur. Creative tension is produced through the process of moving forward with this new form versus the compulsive temptation to slide back into old patterns of behavior. This creative tension also manifests itself because the Soul may not yet know how to actualize or establish the new form. The resulting tension or confrontation is usually seen as the individual against him or herself, against society, or against all that constitutes the past. From an evolutionary standpoint, this new form or mode must be actualized or established before the individual can move on.

102ー Biseptile: Following the square the new form required at that evolutionary junction in once again identified as a special destiny of a highly individualized nature. This aspect produces a remembrance of whatever was identified at the septile aspect. Now the desire is to exteriorize this evolutionary cycle or intention, to create a personal reality that reflects this new purpose. As a result, the element of 吐ate・occurs in such a way that the Soul will create the necessary circumstances that will manifest at key points in the individuals life that point the way to that special destiny and personal reality.

120ー Trine: The individual is now full of him or herself, so to speak. The desire and intent of the new evolutionary purpose demands creative actualization. This aspect also produces the potential for conscious awareness of the entire process: the whole scope of past conditions that have led to this moment. The individual can now create a personal reality that clearly reflects the new evolutionary purpose that began at the New phase conjunction. The individual can easily understand what must be done in order to create this reality, and can easily integrate this within him or herself as well as establishing it as a personal lifestyle within the existing social reality.

135ー Sesquiquadrate: This is a very powerful aspect that reflects an evolutionary transition between the First Quarter phase and the Gibbous phase. The intention in this aspect is one wherein the egocentric structure within the personality that the Soul has created must experience a humiliation. This occurs as a reaction to the willful assertion of the ego that has been living for only itself as it has sought to discover and actualize the new evolutionary intention, patterns, forms, and structures.

Now the evolutionary process is one in which the ego must progressively align itself with the needs of the overall social environment. This occurs through experiencing resistance and blockage from the social environment. The ego is forced to analyze and reflect on why this resistance is occurring. Via this new understanding, the ego now learns to adjust its strong sense of individualized purpose and the forms, patterns, and structures that reflect that purpose to the common needs of the social environment.

                                                   The Gibbous Phase

The Gibbous phase reflects another evolutionary transition wherein the Soul now intends to humble itself in order to begin the process of social integration of the original evolutionary intention reflected at the New phase conjunction. The Soul is preparing to integrate into social reality as an equal among other people. Until now, the Soul has inflated itself through an egocentric self development of the original purpose. The inflated balloon of the ego must now be popped.

Within the Gibbous phase, there are five aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

135ー Sesquiquadrate: This represents a continuation of the process begun while this aspect occurred in the First Quarter phase. The challenge of this aspect can continue to produce negative results, because the individual may refuse to adapt and adjust his or her newly won and realized intent. If so, then the individual is thrown back on the past and experiences confusion as to how to establish the personal reality and purpose within the external environment until the necessary adjustments are made.

144ー Biquintile: If the sesquiquadrate aspect was experienced negatively, this aspect will serve to realign the individual with the original evolutionary purpose by relating it to the individualizing process that took place at the quintile aspect. An analysis must now take place as to how to link the evolutionary purpose to the needs of others and the environment. This analysis must be done so that the new purpose can serve the needs of the whole. It is through service that the individual gives a deeper meaning to the nature of his or her evolutionary purpose.

150ー Inconjunct: This aspect brings either clarification or confusion regarding the individuals self-concept as it is identified in the original evolutionary intent. The individual is aware that there is something special to do in relation to the evolutionary intent, yet does not know how to link this purpose through service to the whole, or to others. This aspect produces some form of crisis in order to induce analysis of what needs to be adjusted within the ego in order to establish the Soul’s reality or purpose within the framework of the social environment. Humility must replace self-inflated or willful expression.

154ー Triseptile: This aspect promotes clarification of the individuals self-concept and evolutionary purpose as it relates to the needs of others, the environment, or the whole. The necessary self-analysis that promoted a purging of self-inflated delusions of grandeur during the inconjunct aspect now evolves into an essential humility that allows the individual to prepare to integrate his or her purpose within the context of the social environment.

180ー Opposition: When this aspect occurs within the Gibbous phase, it correlates to a state of preparation for the evolutionary intents manifestation within the Full phase the need to integrate into social reality as an equal. Accordingly, the ego experiences the full force of other peoples will, desires, and reality in such a way as to enforce awareness that the drives of others are just as strong as its own.

This awareness occurs through the experience of being opposed by the beliefs, values, attitudes, and needs of other people. This opposition can create anger and fear within the ego, creating a temptation to oppose that which is opposing itself. This reaction takes the form of cyclically withdrawing altogether from social interaction, and willful assertion of the ego within social interaction. Such attacks and retreats will continue to manifest until the soul is able to integrate into the social sphere as an equal.

                                                         The Full Phase

This phase can be quite problematic, because the Soul is equally divided between the opposing forces of wanting to be completely free and independent, and the need to actualize or fulfill itself through relationships of all kinds. This inner opposition typically creates cycles in which the individual fluctuates between the extremes of complete social immersion, and cycles of complete social withdrawal. In either case, the nature of the extremes produces its own problems. On the one hand, complete social immersion leads to a cumulative state in which the individual feels overwhelmed by the impact of so many people who represent all kinds of values and lifestyles. This has the effect of making the individual feel that they have lost their own essence, so to speak.

This then sets in motion the next extreme, in which the individual tries to totally isolate from this overwhelming impact. This creates an equally unbalanced situation in which the individual implodes inwardly. Isolated from the perspectives of social contact and context, the individual loses all perspective about him or herself. Feeling over isolated and confused, the individual now rushes back into social immersion. Back and forth, back and forth. The key, of course, is to learn how to balance these two competing desires.

This will lead to the actualization of the real purpose of this archetype, which is the progressive socialization of consciousness. In this context, the individuals learn what the social system needs from them, and how to socially integrate their individual purpose. To learn balance is to learn how to pay attention to their instinctual nature. When the instinct occurs to withdraw from social interaction, then the challenge is to simply honor this. When the instinct occurs to become socially involved, then the challenge is to simply honor this. In this way, balance is achieved.

Within the Full phase, there are five aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

180ー Opposition: At this evolutionary bridge and juncture, the individual meaning given to the original evolutionary intent must now be given social meaning. It must be related to and shared with others. This aspect produces the necessity to give the original evolutionary purpose a socialized context or framework to operate through so that the individual can continue the ongoing evolutionary development initiated at the New phase conjunction. In order to do so, the individual must enter into social relationships revealing that he or she is an equal among others. The individual must learn to listen to others through relationships in order to evaluate his or her own individuality, and must learn how to relate or apply the evolutionary purpose in a way that is needed by others.

Nevertheless, the opposition often produces a potential confrontation of will and clashing desires, because the individual may feel that their personal power or sense of personal identity is being absorbed and lost through the necessity to interact with others. They may have a sense of losing control of their personal destiny, and the power to shape that destiny from a strictly egocentric point of view. The individual may choose to resist the necessity of developing an expanded social awareness, and of being pulled out of self-oriented narcissistic world, by attempting to dominate others through strength of will to shove their personal purpose down the throats of others in order to feel powerful and secure. Until the person succeeds in linking his or her individual purpose to a social need, and becomes an equal social being, he or she will remain at this evolutionary gate.

The force of the opposition is contained in the ideas, values, beliefs, and needs of others as contrasted with the individuals own needs, ideas, beliefs, etc. The opposing force is also reflected in the dual desires of the Soul, which translates into personal will confronting higher will in this context. The desire to return to the Source manifests as the need to move onward, and the desire to maintain separateness manifests itself as the need to remain where one already is for security reasons.

206ー Triseptile: The original purpose and individual meaning was given social meaning at the opposition. Now it is ready to cooperate with a social or collective need in a realized state.

210ー Inconjunct: The new social evolutionary purpose or intent serves to clarify the individual痴 concept or awareness of personal and social limitations熔f what he or she can and cannot do, and of what is required of the individual by others in order that the social purpose may be expressed. If these limits are transgressed, then intense emotional confrontations will occur in order to reinforce this lesson in awareness. The waxing inconjunct induced personal humility. The waning inconjunct will induce social humility and purification.

216ー Biquintile: The socialized evolutionary purpose is now further refined through the individuals awareness of his or her special capacities, abilities, or capabilities as contrasted or evaluated against the capabilities, abilities, or capacities of others.

235ー Sesquiquadrate: When this aspect occurs within the Full phase, it is preparatory to entering the archetypal intent of the Disseminating phase. Accordingly, the egocentric consciousness of the Soul is forced again to expand itself to now understand the nature of the existing social customs, rules, regulations, laws, and traditions that define the current society that the Soul is born into.

This is necessary in order to integrate the socialized evolutionary intention that has preceded this aspect. For example, an individual who had Pluto aspected to Mercury in this way could feel that the role of a psychologist would be the best form and structure through which to integrate their individualized evolutionary purpose in a social way. This aspect would then create the awareness of what society dictated in order to be an authorized psychologist: going to school, securing credentials, etc.

                                                 The Disseminating Phase

The Disseminating phase reflects the ongoing socialization of the evolutionary intention reflected in the original New phase conjunction. Now it becomes absolutely necessary for the Soul to learn everything that there is to learn about the nature of the existing society that it is born into. The consensus reality of the society will have already established rules, customs, traditions, laws and rules that allow that society to live together as an organized unit. The additional evolutionary requirement is to integrate the purpose of the original intention within the society in such a way as to fulfill the Souls social obligations.

Within the Disseminating phase, there are three aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

235ー Sesquiquadrate: A new crisis now occurs, because the individual must learn everything there is to learn about culture and societal traditions, customs, norms, rules, laws, regulations, and taboos before the socialized evolutionary purpose can be established with the society. The crisis occurs because the individual is ready to disseminate the purpose, to apply and establish it, but must learn how to establish it on societies terms.

240ー Trine: This aspect correlates to the evolutionary process of expansion and refinement of the abstract and social consciousness. The individual now has the power and ability to understand how the society works, and on that basis will know how to institute and establish his or her own individualized social purpose within it. The individual can now shape and disseminate the purpose because others (society) will not feel threatened or unnecessarily challenged by the individual.

270ー Square: When the square occurs within the Disseminating phase, it is preparing the Soul for another key evolutionary development, which will be reflected in the Last Quarter phase. Accordingly, it creates a crisis in the consciousness of the Soul that has become socialized through absorption into societies beliefs, customs, values, moralities, etc. This crisis is based on the evolutionary need to move away from those conditions in order to expand the consciousness yet again toward the universal and the timeless. At this juncture, the Soul cannot conceive of the new thought forms that reflect this need for expansion. It only knows that the existing thought forms reflected in consensus opinion are too limited and no longer relevant to its need. Therefore, this aspect creates a rebellion against the consensus.

                                                The Last Quarter Phase

Dane Rudhyar called this phase a crisis in consciousness. It is a major crisis involving the individuals belief systems of knowing what to believe. Belief systems reflect the human need to create philosophies, including religious philosophies, that explain the nature of our phenomenal existence.

Any group of people will have a consensus belief or philosophical system that explains the nature of phenomenal existence. In this phase, the Soul must rebel against such consensus belief systems in order to expand its consciousness and embrace the universal truths: those not limited by any belief system. Thus, this phase correlates to a shedding of skins in which the Soul progressively begins to decondition itself from the impact of consensus opinion.

In a larger sense, this phase correlates to the beginning of the process in which the Soul desires to bring to culmination and completion anything that is not finished or resolved from the cycle of development that has preceded this phase.

Within the Last Quarter phase there are five aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

270ー Square: The Soul, having learned all there was to learn about society and culture, and having become a socialized being in that context, now experiences a process of repolarization of the consciousness. This crisis in consciousness revolves around the tension between the Souls evolutionary accomplishments of the past and the Souls evolutionary drive toward the future. The intent is to begin a preliminary building of new foundations of awareness and knowledge that embrace the universal, the timeless, and the absolute. The old patterns, beliefs, cultural truths, and societal values will no longer serve as the map through which the individual creates social and personal meaning. What to believe, what to think, and how to relate become pressing issues as the individual begins the journey of deconditioning him or herself.

288ー Quintile: The evolutionary intent here is to transform consciousness in relation to individual and social identity. The individual must learn to relate inwardly in an entirely different way, because he or she is more than an egocentric or socialized person. This reorientation process is leading the individual into visions and awareness of his or her universal or timeless Self, and the relationship to the Ultimate Other. The individual must now learn to see him or herself in relation to the cosmos. There is increasing knowledge or realization of the individuals cosmic role in relation to the functions or duties performed in this life.

300ー Sextile: The new creative identity of the individual in relation to the cosmic whole is now given a productive purpose and understanding. In light of this, the individual can fulfill their universal and social role in this life. The transition between the past and the future can either be easily made or easily resisted at this evolutionary juncture.

308ー Septile: Individual action is taken with respect to the perceived universal and social purpose, and by relating this purpose or role to some special destiny. The potential for misapplication or misidentification of this role and purpose still exists, though: specifically, the potential for delusion. However, at key times this aspect will produce circumstances or situations to set the individual straight if he or she is in error or confusion. If there is uncertainty about the role or purpose, circumstances or situations will arise to
teach or remind the person of that purpose.

315ー Semi-square: When this aspect occurs within the Last Quarter phase, it correlates to the evolutionary preparation for the Balsamic phase. Accordingly, there is a high degree of internalized stress that revolves around the need to withdraw from all social interaction in order for the new seeds in awareness to occur that reflect an understanding of the universal and the timeless. Also highlighted is the need for the individual to fulfill existing obligations and duties.

                                                      The Balsamic Phase

This phase correlates to the evolutionary need to bring to completion the entire cycle begun at the New phase conjunction so that a brand-new evolutionary cycle of development can begin. All unfinished or incomplete business, patterns, stages of development, etc. will be recreated so that the necessary culmination can take place. In addition, the consciousness of the Soul now begins the process of culminating the mutation within it that started at the Last Quarter phase. Thus, the consciousness now becomes highly internalized and self-contemplative as it reflects on and considers the nature of Universal Reality, and how the individualized consciousness is a reflection of that reality.

Within the Balsamic phase, there are five aspects that correlate to specific phases of development, as follows:

315ー Semi-square: A new evolutionary crisis emerges as the individual begins to accelerate the mutation between all that constitutes the personal and cultural past and the future: the unknown, the unconditioned, the timeless, and the absolute. This crisis is also based on a conflict or collision of desires and needs.

On the one hand, the person wants to withdraw in order to internalize the consciousness so that he or she can become aware of the new seeds or impulses relative to a new evolutionary cycle of development. There is a need for self-contemplation and experimentation with new forms, thoughts, and experiences that reflect these new seeds or impulses. These experiments may create real conflict and confusion, causing the individual to attempt to recover the past.

In this case, eventual disintegration will occur. Such an individual needs to form new kinds of social relationships with others on the same evolutionary path. On the one hand, the individual is required to fulfill his or her social duties and obligations. On the other hand, the individual wants to withdraw in order to experiment with new ways of being in every way. This produces a conflict. The key is to do both, and to follow these contrasting rhythms as best as possible when they occur.

320ー Novile: The seeds of the new evolutionary cycle begin an active gestation process. Like light bulbs turned on in a dark room, the Soul becomes aware of new thoughts, perceptions, and revelations as to the nature of the new evolutionary cycle and purpose to come. Peering over the precipice, the individual is ready to jump. Negatively, the individual can become confused and may attempt to retreat into the past as these revelatory thoughts now threaten his or her existing reality and security. This cycle is based on the cumulative effect of actions in this and other lives. Frustration may result from an awareness of the need to complete the karmic and evolutionary intent of this life.

330ー Semi-sextile: The new evolutionary cycle begins to become clear in the form of complete conceptions and ideas which the individual may attempt to establish in this life. In other words, the individual may attempt to formulate him or herself around timeless values and beliefs in the time and space-bound context of his or her culture.

Such a person will be considered strange and different by others who do not understand or comprehend what he or she is attempting to do or establish. He or she is thus challenged to remain committed to and centered on their timeless vision. The whole evolutionary cycle begun way back at the original conjunction in the New phase is now rapidly dissolving. Some individuals will experience this as a sense of meaninglessness and emptiness, and will manifest a diffuse or undefined personal identity or purpose in relation to the planets in this condition.

The key is to let go of the past and to allow new patterns, ideas and impulses to enter the consciousness of their own accord. Approached in this way, these new thoughts, ideas, and impulses become the light that illuminates the path to the individuals future.

360ー Conjunction: An evolutionary cycle has been completed: culminated. From the point of the waning semi-square at 315 degrees through the conjunction, the transition of focus from egocentric consciousness to universal consciousness was initiated. Any two planets found in this condition within the birth chart (from semi-square through the conjunction) has completed, or is completing, an entire evolutionary cycle. The individual will never again experience those planetary functions in the way that they were previously experienced. A totally new evolutionary cycle is about to begin. Planets forming this type of conjunction become the potential vehicles through which the universal, the timeless, or the Source can be consciously experienced or sensed.

Conversely, they can serve as the vehicles through which the individual experiences confusion, disassociation, alienation, disillusionment, and discontentment in order to learn about the nature of illusion, in the sense of making some delusion or illusion the ultimate meaning that they desire and need. In essence, the experience of disillusionment teaches that ultimate meaning cannot be found through any external condition or person.

                                                        ASPECT PATTERNS

This is very common for counseling astrologers to see. First of all, determine the phases of the aspects in the T-Square. Full or gibbous phase opposition, First or Last quarter, crescent or disseminating squares. Sometimes one side will be a crescent and the other side is a last quarter with a gibbous opposition, each of those are archetypes.

T-Square equals creative stress relative to behavioral development and that stress is specifically linked to the very nature of the phases that they take place within. The ability of the person to handle the creative stress in a T-Square and respond to it is determined by the mode - fixed, mutable or cardinal. A mutable T-Square is going to have an inherent ability and/or desire to grow as necessary and a natural facility to adapt to such changes. Clearly, a fixed T-Square is going to be inherently resistant. Any time you deal with fixed energy, as a general principle, it has to get used to something before it acts.

This process of getting used to it equals internal compression in the fixed T-Square. The analogy is squeezing an orange to get juice. The getting used to it is usually related to external and/or internal confrontations to the point where they, in the end, have no choice. The cardinal T-Square is extremely adept at becoming enthused at the idea of change, but once they make it, freaking out, and then trying to recover the very thing that they have just ditched and, thus, one step forward, two steps back.

First, use the signs to determine the mode, then you qualify it by the House. For example, if I have a mutable T-square taking place in natural cardinal houses, this is where the art of the astrologer comes in, to synthesize the apparently competitive nature of two archetypes.

The cardinal T-Square has the enthusiasm to initiate change, the essence of cardinal, but the change can then be too much of a change, then they become emotionally insecure because their linkage with the familiar reality of the past has been severed. Then they become insecure and thus attempt to recover the very thing they have just changed. This become the basis of extremely complex and extremely changeable emotions that are not predictable, which not only confuses that person, but anyone else that they happen to be interfacing with. Imagine an individual with a cardinal T-Square with the focus being Mars in Cancer in the Seventh House. On one side of the square, you have a first quarter square to Venus and on the other side you have a first quarter square to Saturn and thus, Saturn and Venus are in opposition.

Audience: Would it be something about crisis in initiating relationships and restriction needing to be exercised in initiating them?

Jeffrey: Yes. That is certainly in place, sort of a push-pull.

Audience: The cardinal problem could be somebody who probably changed the relationship and then freaked out and wanted the relationship back.

Jeffrey: And that can drive the potential lover just batty, can't it? We have competing desires here. On the one hand, the thing is focused on Mars emphasizing the need for independence and freedom and yet it is in the Seventh House - the instinct to complete oneself is through relationships. Right away you have a paradox.

That inherent paradox sets in motion the competing and revolving and utterly unpredictable emotional states, which of themselves determine behavior. It is not the behavior itself, i.e. how they are expressing themselves to their partner, but rather themselves that become utterly changeable. At one moment, they are totally there, totally Cancer (for those who have been the recipient of Cancer energy ) but then, the Mars kicks in and now they are withholding the emotions because in the first cycle they had given too much away, Seventh House/Venus in Libra, and had depleted themselves emotionally and thus became un-centered or lost their sense of equilibrium within themselves.

So this sets in motion the next cycle, the need to retain. It is going to be an ongoing crisis in action as to how to even be in relationships. Are they going to respond to Tenth House Libra Venus trips, i.e. society providing the clues? Saturn in Aries is reinforcing this, and it is focused on Mars, and they are both first quarter squares, crisis in action.

What kind of sexual issues might you expect here? Beth knows. Would you like to share?

Audience: They would internalize their sexual energy or make love with themselves.

Jeffrey: No. Would not a focus of Mars in the Seventh House create an emotional sense of needing to have their sexual need completed through an external partner?

Audience: I was looking at the Cancer as being more withdrawn.

Jeffrey: That is true. But until that is realized, is not Cancer learning how to do it within self-care, but the delusion of Cancer, almost in all cases, is to seek that security outside. So they are going to feel that the fulfillment of their sexual need is dependent upon a partner. And, yet, because you have this dynamic cardinal square focused on that Mars, this creates the potential of....

Audience: Violence.

Jeffrey: It is not necessarily linked with violence, it could be...

Audience: It could be if the cardinal goes too far and then back and is real sorry about that.

Jeffrey: Yes. That would be a factor relative to the confusion of the partner, i.e. partners who felt that they were being jacked around.

Audience: And then a tremendous feeling of guilt and trying to make it OK.

Jeffrey: With respect to the T-Square, this person is going to have a natural propensity for lots of experience, a source of self-knowledge, Mars, action/reaction. They can get tired of any given mate as a general dynamic and now specific to a sexual dynamic.

This is with respect to the crisis in action. Now whom do I be with? Now whom do I seek? So this can create problems in the existing relationship when the person finds they are sexually attracted to another Seventh House because the cardinal T-square is going to create the impulse to initiate the experience. But the Saturn in the T-square is going to attempt to suppress that attraction while the Venus in Libra says go for it. Venus and Saturn are in opposition. This will distinctly manifest relative to gender.

Audience: Wouldn't one being in a relationship for other reasons such as career or power come into it too?

Jeffrey: Of course.

Audience: If you moved these into the fixed houses, would the experience be more intense? There would be a lot of resistance to the pulls in each direction, but the urge to act would be another issue altogether with respect to repressing the urge to act or resisting the urge to act.

Jeffrey: Yes, it would tend to emphasize the whole paradox because a person in that scenario would tend to resist the impulse to manifest. They would internalize. In the cardinal T-square, there is going to be more of a tendency to act as the impulse occurs.

Audience: What about mutable, and where they are adaptable?

Jeffrey: The mutable would go with the experience as an on-going experience, whereas cardinal would want the experience and then freak out and try to recover what it lost.

Audience: I get it. You are a success.

Jeffrey: Hey, minor victories.

Audience: So, how would you go about counseling someone in this situation?

Jeffrey: Well, first of all you would want to discuss with them why they set up circumstances that they then go about undermining or unraveling and how that effect itself creates insecurity. Knowing why they are doing that is a piece of self-knowledge, and until they have that kind of knowledge, the pattern will be sustained. In the area of relationships, you want to talk to them about what all of their essential needs are so you eliminate the emotional paradox. This will invariably attract mates who only embody some of the needs, but not all of them: the passing attraction.

How can the passing attraction possibly represent all of their essential needs? Once they make a desire, Mars, to have a total relationship, which is another whole issue, they could, at a personality level, say, "Yeah, I want that relationship." But at a Soul or subconscious level, it could be the reverse truth, which is the source of the self-undermining. So first they have to come to grips with what they want. Do they want a revolving door kind of situation in their life? Or do they want to make that fundamental commitment? If, so, here is what you need.

Audience: When people come to you, do they often feel that they are trapped in their patterns, and that there is no way out?

Jeffrey: Yes, unfortunately, that’s generally what I attract.

Audience: So you don't tell them they are doomed, do you? Yes, you are trapped.

Jeffrey: There is no way out.

Audience: Is that why you were complaining about the fact that your clients don't always do what you say, hardly ever do what you tell them to do? Is it a difficult thing to do because you attract people who...

Jeffrey: I tend to attract very compulsive people.

Audience: Gee, here we are everybody! Compulsive support group!

Jeffrey: Pluto aspects everything in my chart, so, surprise, surprise. And I'm delivering them inconjunct messages, Pluto inconjunct Uranus. I'm asking them, in most cases, to make fundamental changes and to have faith. Now, the ones who tend to follow the suggestions and do change their reality are very happy later, when they see it all works.

The polarity point will generate a lot of conflicts and collisions of will over authority issues. Who is going to define who, and who is going to play what role, and who is going to wear the pants and all those things. Even down to basic habits and rhythm patterns on a daily basis, Cancer. This one will generate the kind of conflict such as who puts the cap on the toothpaste and who doesn't, and then make it a big issue.

Audience: So the First House is what is lacking in that person. What is missing?

Jeffrey: It is not so much described as lacking as it becomes a relief point to create integration of the T-square. People without fail, I don't care who it is, gravitate to that place.

Audience: So the qualities and the sign of the First House have to be stressed in order to find a way out of this dilemma?

Jeffrey: It is instinctively developed. It doesn't even take thought. It just happens.

Audience: But if a person were to consciously develop that as the answer to the integration?

Jeffrey: Right, because until it is consciously developed, it creates another kind of conflict back and forth.

Audience: I looked at a chart with a T-square and then the polarity point of the focus point of the T-square had a Yod. The behavior that I could figure out was that they were going from one part of the Yod to the other part of the Yod and being very angry with one and then the other.

Jeffrey: So then the question becomes why did they decide to be born with that pattern. What is the evolutionary intent?

Audience: Do people understand these things when you ask them?

Jeffrey: The people who ask the questions in that way will. But there are a lot of ways to find the same point that they can take in.

Audience: Is the T-square the most common pattern because the person is in enough turmoil to seek out some feedback, or is it because it is the most typical aspect?

Jeffrey: It is because they get weary of the struggle, and in this culture one of the conditioning patterns is to not seek out alternative counseling in terms of the status quo, so you tend to get these folks at the end of their rope. You are sort of the court of last resort, so to speak. By that time, they are ready to hear it.

                                                           GRAND TRINE

This will come your way, but not so commonly. The neat thing is that there is not a lot of developmental stress. The Grand Trines tend to promote an intrinsic ability to integrate the various planetary function/parts of that Grand Trine in such a way that it become the foundation of their life because it is so easy to integrate and understand. Evolutionarily speaking, there is a reason for that Grand Trine.

Determine what mode, air, fire, etc., it is and then they will manifest it relative to that archetype. If you have an air grand trine, that person is going to manifest an ongoing curiosity about life itself, as a boredom factor; yet, because of the grand trine, they have an inherent understanding of what to do because of that boredom and thus not making rash or impulsive decisions that the T-square could make and then be sorry for.

With the earth and/or water grand trines, these are the folks who tend to want to get to a certain level of growth or understanding and then try to maintain it, let it become their operative status quo. It works. And because there is no creative stress, it is easy to maintain, easy to resist any additional growth and to maintain that bottom line. In other words, there can be an inherent inertia in the earth and water grand trines. But, then, evolutionarily speaking, there is going to be a reason for that.

                                                          GRAND CROSS

This is, in our view, the most problematic configuration. Two T-squares make a Grand Cross. And the most problematic one within that is the fixed one. This is what I call the walking time bomb because all these planets are involved in a tremendous level of creative stress relative to behavioral development. They are perpetually experiencing cycles of stagnation leading to metamorphosis, leading to complacency, leading to more cycles of growth which are resisted. The impulses for growth are resisted in the fixed Grand Cross. This creates the walking time bomb, because they cannot be forever resisted. The Grand Cross will make it happen. When the bomb goes off we have an explosion, and there is no choice but to change.

A case in point would be an individual who had energy in the Twelfth and Sixth and Tenth and Fourth. Part of it is taking place in a cardinal archetype and part in a mutable one, but with fixed planets. So the initial response is to resist. That resistance will invariably lead to more of a catatonic reaction and a total disengagement from their reality which then promotes relative to internal compression and to disengagement, the seeds of what must change the thoughts, the awareness which then translates into plotting strategies, at least inwardly and silently - not expressed to anyone, of how to make that change which is gestating in the greenhouse within.

This finally manifests, if not acted upon at the right time, as an explosion. This destroys things in order to make new things. On the other hand, if the person implements thoughts and awareness as necessary, the explosion can be blunted and it can be a controlled explosion.

Audience: When the fixed Grand Cross is also in fixed houses?

Jeffrey: Ah!

Audience: I have heard that a person with this configuration can become very famous because of the pressures involved. In cardinal signs, they might have to ability to get out there and do something and the stress behind it would be helpful.

Jeffrey: That would only be true if the issue of change is part of their evolutionary necessity. Part of their Soul program. It is not an absolute.

Contrast this with the mutable Grand Cross. This is going to be an individual quite contrary to the fixed. This is a person who wants no limits, no corrals, and no saddles. One who is always pointed and aware of the next horizon, the lure and its promise, and wants the freedom to move into it. One who has chosen, as a Soul, to effect maximum possible growth that is humanly possible.

The Soul knows that. It has made that program and thus it can become incredibly resistant to the Grand Cross, to any restrictions. Let's imagine we are dealing with an inherently alienated Soul, from birth, alienated from culture. Can you see how this can become self-defeating, i.e. somehow creating the delusion that if I integrate into the system, I lose myself. So, as in all things, it depends upon how it is responded to. There are no absolute manifestations of this. The archetype is the same, of course.

Audience: What is the ideal response for the fixed cross?

Jeffrey: That change is necessary - to have cycles of stability leading to cycles of metamorphosis leading to cycles of stability, and to leave the resistance out of that. That is fairly impossible, however, because fixed is fixed.

The thing that we explained about the cardinal mode is doubly emphasized in a grand cross in a cardinal mode. The only time you can really mitigate the cardinal mode is when most of that energy is being focused through the natural fixed houses. That would tend to create forethought prior to the impulsive action. Cardinal can suddenly get so far a field and then suddenly become aware and freak out. The mutable there would tend to create the ability to understand the nature of the experience even if they did go too far a field. The emotional damage would not be that severe. Keep in mind, also, that the mutable emphasized the intuitive, so they would tend to have an intuitive awareness of what to implement or initiate and what not to.

This is another very problematic pattern, the double inconjunct linked with the sextile. This was originally called a "Finger of God". This implies a feeling of destiny; a trusting of the intuition so that when you come to the “y” in the road you would know which way to go. The deeper issue is that commonly people with this pattern experience tremendous frustration. The yod promotes a knowing, a vision, an awareness from on high that is not necessarily consciously defined.

It is like a telephone line inconjunct to God and receiving message that somehow seen utterly unrelated to your current circumstances or reality which then sets in motion this tremendous level of analysis in which you are now focusing on all the imperfections and lacks of your reality contrasted now with this vision from on high.

So life always seems somehow less than right. It either leads to perpetual or transitory bitchiness, complaints, something's always wrong, or making crises where none need to exist. It can lead into negative self-concepts because, in their own evaluation, they cannot actualize the vision from on high.

The inconiuncts focus on the issue of humility, personal and social limitations. The person is now analyzing themselves mercilessly and now comparing themselves, full phase/gibbous phase, to the authority on high. Of course they are going to seem less than adequate. So they never feel quite ready to implement or actualize the vision from on high. It is always held in the head.

Audience: Since the yod contains stress, what is the relief?

Jeffrey: It creates a really highly tuned electrical system because it is so tight. The midpoint in the sextile/opposition point of the focus of the yod is called the boomerang point.

Audience: What does that do? Does it bring in more information from on high or does it....... ?

Jeffrey: The boomerang point, of itself, is never activated unless there is a planet at that midpoint, thus creating an opposition. If there is, then there is a natural coming and going, coming and going.

Audience: What if that is a person? Venus? As sort of the symbol of whom you choose to be with?

Jeffrey: Well, you can draw a partner who keeps throwing your shit back at you. Or they mirror your shit. At the same time, they can mirror your potential, and yet you are experiencing the frustration of not being able to achieve it.

Audience: It seems that the planet on the ends of those two inconjuncts is doubly stressed.

Jeffrey: Yes, but where that planet is manifesting by House and Sign is exactly the area where this vision on high is meant to be expressed. That is the point. Through that function or area. So, the solution of the yod is to realize that the path to perfection simply occurs through action, one step at a time. Clearly, this kind of pattern is emphasizing the evolutionary necessity for humility from an egocentric point of view.

Audience: So you are listening to God instead of yourself.

Jeffrey: Yes. What you are actually trying to do, from another point of view, is to shift the very center of gravity in your consciousness and that means in this kind of culture from the left brain to the right brain, from deductive logic to inductive logic, from empirical to intuitive.

Audience: If you have a septile instead of a sextile, is it still a yod?

Jeffrey: Technically, no. But, in the way I do astrology, yes. Technically, the answer is no, in reality, the answer is yes. The origin of boredom is God.

Audience: He wants you to be dissatisfied.

Jeffrey: God is not a he.

Audience: She wants you to be dissatisfied.

Jeffrey: God is not a she.

                                                     MYSTIC RECTANGLE

Two oppositions, two trines, and two sextiles. God knows why it is called the mystical rectangle. With respect to the oppositions, we have a lot of creative stress, but with the trines and sextiles, you thus have the ability to understand the nature of such creative stress and the ability to integrate it relative to making the efforts necessary to accomplish the growth required of the opposing forces.

Audience: It seems like someone who could do a lot of some particular activity relative to the oppositions and sextiles and then they could absolutely change their reality - from ditch digger to architect and make a creative difference.

Jeffrey: That's true. In fact, my brother is a case of this. At one point he is a Zen priest for five years, then he becomes a drug dealer, and then a craftsperson on Maui making bamboo crafts and becoming president of the craft guild.

Audience: You have the sextiles that can make the transition between the two and then you have the trines that can synthesize a bunch of talents and the oppositions bringing in the creative stress.

Jeffrey: That is actually why it is probably called the mystic rectangle because this person has some sort of mystical ability to integrate and understand the massive chaos and stress.

The point of this yod example is Uranus in the Sixth House in Pisces, one inconjunct is Neptune in Leo in the Eleventh House and the other is Jupiter/Moon in Libra in the First House. This person is in their sixties. Newly individuated evolutionary station, male, white, middle class values.

Is this not clearly a case in which one of the deepest lessons that this particular person has chosen for himself is to rebel, Uranus, against all conditioning patterns. Yet, in rebelling against these conditioning patterns, are they not going to generate a Sixth House crisis relative to perceived obligations and duties, Sixth House? They are going to be the receiver or receptor of voices, or knowledge or information or thoughts from on high that simply manifest in their consciousness of their own volition, not a product of Sixth House analysis. We not only have the Piscean thing implicated, the Sixth House, Uranus, and the yod, but we also have Neptune as part of the equation, Jupiter linked with the Moon.

The whole lessons is too transfer into the intuition and thus learn how to trust, Moon, the messages, communications and such that come to them. It means to open up their relationship dynamics to now experience on equal terms a relationship. This is part of the deconditioning pattern itself, deconditioning from generational norms of how to be in relationships. The man is 60 and speaks for itself. It also suggests that the gentleman is trying to integrate his own anima/animus as a form of deconditioning from cultural norms of how to be a male. This can potentially create confusion.

Audience: Did you say that this man was born out of generation?

Jeffrey: Of course. He would be someone who wouldn't fit with the status quo, Sixth House Uranus, and might feel alienated from his environment, deep within himself. They wouldn't be able to understand him and he wouldn't understand why they don't understand him. However, he will know how to project himself through Libra - so most people aren't going to understand the deep inner turmoil that is going on.

Audience: Do you ever see in a chart where relationships are not to be as equals?

Jeffrey: Of course. Keep in mind that astrology reflects life and if everybody had an absolute need to be in relationships as equals, we would certainly have a different planet, wouldn't we? Despite your playboys and playgirls, people are still doing traditional trips in relationships. That is reality. On the other hand, there is an increase in the gay population.

Audience: Vis a vis the lessons of humility around the Sixth House, is it possible that the Neptune is trying to dissolve some of that Leo egocentricity?

Jeffrey: Yes, relative to mental equations. This is an individual who has felt absolutely intellectually superior for many lifetimes. He could out-argue the best arguer. But what has happened in this life is that all the famous arguments are collapsing into absolute meaningless confusion. One of the liberation points of the Sixth House Uranus is to be liberated from false intellectual arguments or superiorities and the egocentricity associated with the mental process. It is not that the person is not adept intellectually; it is the association with the intellect that is suspect. A "look at me" attitude.

Audience: With Uranus in Pisces, do you think that underneath all that confusion and need to change is the need to spiritualize?

Jeffrey: Sure. But, at this point in time, it is associated with moving into the individuated state through a progressive rebellion against status quo answers. It is a progressive rebellion against the status quo and moving the person in an accelerated fashion into the individuated state, where they begin to rebel progressively and that is his form of spiritualizing at this point relative to the reported evolutionary condition.

We are not going to be advocating a full-blown spiritual path. We would be much more recommending strategies of reading, i.e. "Tao of Physics" or "The Optimum Project", stuff that his mind can deal or grapple with, or Krishnamurti material because Krishnamurti will out-argue this man. You need to promote his need to interface with more powerful intellects than himself. That induces the humility.

Audience: This it an actual human being here?

Jeffrey: Judith apparently knows the fellow.

Audience: My question is with Uranus in the Sixth House, what does he do?

Jeffrey: Right now, he is a stock-broker and involved in putting together financial deals which involve a number of different companies and individuals - real complex financial deals. But he is an engineer by education. He is a lover of the arts, Libra stuff.
Audience: Would the Sixth House Pisces represent kind of a synthesis thing? Brings together lots of people. Does this person belong to any kind of organizations that are spiritually related or religiously related?

Jeffrey: No. Just me.

Audience: Is there such a thing as a grand sextile?

Jeffrey: Yes. But only people in their 42s and 61s, 62s. But be sure to pay attention to the phases when you synthesize all those sextiles.

To be continued ..........

                                                     KEY PLANETARY PAIRS

These are the definitions of the key planetary pairs. Now you can place them in their phasal context and you will have some information in order to understand how they are operating archetypically. Then you add the next layer, the signs they are in, then the houses they are in, and then you synthesize, which is the art of the astrologer, the ability to synthesize archetypes, even if they are competing archetypes - that is the art of astrology, no longer a technical issue, but an art.

                                                        THE SUN AND MOON

These correlate to the psychological notion of self-actualization, the need in all people to actualize their inherent purpose for their life on a day to day basis, to give that purpose a face and image, a way of personally identifying itself, Moon. It describes how the person continuously is integrating themself on a moment to moment, second to second, year to year basis.

Now, the need to give it a self-image or a name equals the need to feel secure with it. The Moon, of itself, correlates to the nature, type and relative strength of one's ego, the phenomena of the ego itself. It is not possible to get rid of the ego. You cannot operate on the brain and remove the ego nor can you remove it psychologically.

The issue, spiritually speaking, is to align that ego with the divine ego, that is what the true meaning of getting rid of the ego means. The ego is necessary because it is an individualizing agent. It gives a self-image. That self-image can be quite different, by the way, than how other people see you. There can be a discrepancy. What others see and what you see in the mirror is the ascendant, how one instinctually projects oneself without forethought. It is pure instinct.

So, the Sun/Moon describes this by phase. If it is new phase, is this not clearly described, from an evolutionary point of view, as how you go about actualizing yourself, your purpose in this life, comes under this new phase, instinctually. The Sun/ Moon new phase has the instinctual need to initiate experience without encumbrance, without obligation, without commitment, without excessive apology or explanations. It is the need to have enough freedom in life to initiate enough experiences to gather the necessary reactions to find out about yourself and what that purpose is and, at a deeper level, to generate an egocentric structure which in a new phase is forever changing. When a new phase Sun/Moon gets frustrated or confused, it borrows from the full phase - the law of polarity.

Let's say we have Sun/Moon new phase, which is essentially an Arian vibration, and what if those two are in Capricorn, double Capricorn. Relative to the emergence of the new cycle, the new self, the new purpose, the new ego which is not formulated, it is obviously possible that this person is going to take his clues from the social system into which he is born and that from them.

A classic illustration of this is Nixon. Nixon with a Sun in Capricorn and Moon in Aquarius, new phase, and yet a Tenth House Pluto. He gravitated to powerful social identities, lawyer, EP, Senator, liar, that equaled his sense of personal identity and thus accepted all the prevailing social customs and norms as convenient props to use.

This is why you had that weird body type. You have this Capricorn which is trying to contain the Aquarius which is trying to erupt; a person who doesn't know what they are. So you had all these herky-jerky movements, and all the sweat. Whole coats would be lost. Showering and airing wouldn't help. That is because of the high degree of inner compression equaling resistance.

                                                   THE MOON AND SATURN

These correlate to your ability to integrate your ego, your personal identity, who you are within the context of the social systems and/or culture, Saturn, in which you find yourself. The ability to establish your own authority within the authority of the culture. Earlier, it is the social conditioning of family. Heritage, consensus values, lifestyles, beliefs, social class and sociological context - all these shape one's identity. This archetype perpetuates the status quo, the mainstream.

With a new phase Moon/Saturn, you are going to be highly susceptible to your family's imprint but, you are also going to find the instinct to define it, Saturn, yourself, Moon. This can create a clash with the parents and ultimately a cultural clash at some point. With the Moon/Saturn in Aries instead of Capricorn, parents who simply expect you to conform to their ways are going to be faced with a potential battle from day one. Contrast that with the Moon/Saturn being in Aries/Taurus still new phase. Now we would see cycles of collision, butting heads with cycles of stability, Taurus.

Ultimately, the Moon/Saturn tells you how you are going to integrate into society.

                                                     MARS AND VENUS

How one completes oneself through relationships. The act of creation itself is a coupling, the coupling of the creator with its creation. The dynamic of relationship is pervasive and exists at all levels. It is also how one is relating to oneself and thus, how one is relating to another.

Mars/Venus in a crescent phase septile is an individual who is struggling to establish through introspection the uniqueness of her own needs and thus what she desires. The need to bulwark herself from the expectation, Venus, disseminating phase, of society. Throughout her life she will attract key people who will point out the right direction relative to the “y" in the road. This person will feel that she has a special, i.e. septile, mate to be with.

                                                     MERCURY AND JUPITER

This is how one establishes her beliefs, her principles, her philosophies, and creates the necessary intellectual apparatus to explain them, to communicate them. As a result, it correlates to how the person goes about learning as a general dynamic throughout life. All the facts that one learns can ultimately be put together into a belief system.

Mercury/Jupiter in a first quarter square represents a person who instinctually resists or repels information, beliefs or philosophies that she, herself, has not decided upon. She is therefore, resistant to learning that which she does not want to learn. She may become combative or argumentative in conversations and communications of all kinds. She is considered to be strongly opinionated and yet by nature, she is destined to attract, based upon her inner vibration, people who are just as strongly opinionated, just as argument and confrontation prone.

This could be a problem for a 71-year old who is now forced to go through the public education system. Let's put Mercury in Aquarius and Jupiter in Scorpio. As a form of rebellion, he would simply withdraw from the teacher. It would be covert, probably, but just as effective.

So, in effect, this pair describes how you go about learning. In the new phase, this represents a person who challenges existing facts in order to determine new facts from such challenges. This would be different from a person who has Mercury/Jupiter in a disseminating trine. Here is a person who is tired from the battle, evolutionarily speaking.

                                                      JUPITER AND SATURN

Again, Jupiter is correlating to your beliefs and how these beliefs are going to be linked or in harmony or disharmony with the consensus belief patterns of the culture in which you find yourself thus, impacting, i.e. beliefs do determine lifestyle, on your ability to economically survive. If one's beliefs are inherently antithetical to society's beliefs, one would have to create a lifestyle outside that society which impairs one’s ability to earn a living, to make it financially.

Mercury in Pisces and Jupiter in Gemini in last quarter square would be confused about all kinds of ideas which come at them because they are susceptible to the prevailing ideas and would try to adopt them for themselves because they do not know what to think, Pisces. It is in a mutational state, crisis in consciousness, it is leaving behind that which has come before, but without conception, Pisces, and trying to compensate, Jupiter in Gemini, by adopting those Gemini ideas and calling them their own.

But, because of the impulse of the last quarter, it will just throw out as it goes. It will adopt, apply for a while, throw out, adopt some more, throw out so there will be cycles of clarity where some ideas will work for a while, then they will not work which sets in motion a pattern of collecting more information, etc.

Last quarter and balsamic are people who are turning inward, not trying to reform society and lose themselves in society, they are just trying to understand themselves - so they are not so dynamic. They are trying to understand themselves in relation to the cosmos - an impulse that they cannot conceptualize in most cases.

The last quarter is a yang phase which means that you have to take actual action upon this mutational process linked with the crisis in consciousness. It does demand experience, whereas the balsamic is a yin phase. Now you are allowed to internalize and that is why that conflict is measured initially at that semi-square between the two.

Back to Saturn/Jupiter- the economic issue relative to philosophy is obvious. The Jupiter/Saturn cycle has a 20-year life, from conjunction to conjunction.and comes to a point of maturity at the opposition every ten years. When they are in a new phase, you have the impulse of a new economic philosophy relative to political context which is now initiated by whoever happens to be holding power. “Reaganomics” was new relative to what had just happened.

For example, in the 1920s, credit spending came into vogue with respect to the stock market, with futures, speculations, things based on paper rather than reality. We had a president, Harding, who created massive economic problems, who was then followed by Reagan's greatest hero. This new economic philosophy generated the great depression by 1930. Next came FDR and yet another economic philosophy. So the 1940s were prosperous with respect to a wartime economy, the initial seed of the industrial military complex. Then, again recession in the 1950s. The 1960s were a prosperous decade, a democratic balanced budget, Lyndon Johnson, based on another military economy, the Viet Nam war.

The 1970s were another recession decade.. (Notice that the Democrats have generated prosperous times and not Republicans, despite the claims to the contrary.) Then comes along Mr. Reagan with his balanced budget by 1982! How many Americans bought into it? Remember the famous commercial "The shrinking dollar”? It is the economic philosophy of the party that is operating here, Saturn/Jupiter. So, we come to an opposition again in 1989 and 1990. It suggests that the 1990s might not be different no matter who is in power because things are too totally out of whack.

(Since 1840, every president elected every 20 years never finished his office alive. He either died through natural causes or was assassinated.)

Reagan is going to break this, however, because the fact is that..... that is the nature of this harmonic convergence, by the way. The bottom line is that we are now beginning to enter the Aquarian Age. We are in a mutation of ages. Anytime two ages mutate, you have the opportunity to break the cycle of history repeating itself. So one of these little examples is presidents dying or being killed. Reagan will prove this.

So, unless drastic measures are made, the 1990s may very well be, at least for the U.S., that is the context we are speaking of - drastic while at the same time, necessary. If the strength of the economy is based on foreign investments and most of the foreign countries own the gold which is that basis of the U S. economy, what happens when they buy out? It means that when investments in this country are no longer attractive, they can get a rate of return in another country better than this one. When it comes to money, there is no loyalty.

                                                        SATURN AND URANUS

This is the most important cycle. It has a 48-year life from conjunction to conjunction and comes to maturity every 22 years to 24 years after the conjunction. It establishes the social tone, structure, every 48 years. The new social impulse, order, structures. For example, the last conjunction took place in 1942 in Taurus. The context at that time was WW II and life was on the line. The instinct for survival of the human species is the archetype of Taurus.

The revolutionary impulse of Uranus redefining the current structure, Saturn. The maturity in the late 60s was a radical revolution in values, Taurus, personal and human values. The effort was made to radically redefine society itself. The Jews' attitude in the concentration camps was that it was an act of revenge to survive and became a slogan amongst the Jews in the camps.

The original conjunction is now in a balsamic state with itself and is getting ready to form another conjunction next year. This next one is most important because it is going to be taking place in the center of our galaxy between 26 to 28 degrees Sagittarius. Sequentially, there is an inconjunction between the cycle that is now completing and the new one starting next year. Think about that in terms of necessary adjustments.

An example is the species experiencing, relative to existing stress, Uranus, dysfunctional procreational ability. This may be necessary in order to hold down the overpopulation problem. However, man develops even more birth technology (Uranus/Taurus - revolutions in birth technology). Now man has even developed the ability to impregnate a chimpanzee with his sperm and to make a sub-species. What for? Who knows - it is science run amok! The basic issue, however, is one of laziness and wanting a sub-breed to do all the mundane chores, slave labor. The inertia/laziness of Taurus. This is a reflection of the initial conjunction in Taurus.

There was also a revolution in human values, Taurus, that matured or peaked in the late 60s. This challenged the existing social structure, Saturn, to change, radically so, through confrontation - the polarity point being Scorpio. This change was accomplished with the help of music, Taurus. When Rock and Roll was developed in the 50s, relative to the McCarthy era, it was considered a communist conspiracy. There were a series of super conjunctions in Leo in the 50s, so people began to feel their oats, did they not? Super conjunctions are five planets or more in one sign.

In 1990 we are going to have six planets conjunct (maybe 7) in Capricorn. Look at all the faces fall. You should see it through my eyes.

The Joan Baez’s and the Beatles and the Bob Dylan’s that we all responded to in the 60s, they all had this conjunction of Saturn/Uranus in Taurus. These were the seed people.

Take the distribution of food, for example. What do you have when certain countries have stockpiles of food that they have to destroy and you have other countries in which there is starvation? No distribution for political reasons. This sets up Scorpio polarization.

The back to the land movement in this country is a Taurus issue. Self-sufficiency is a Taurean phenomena. Now, with Neptune in Capricorn, what is happening to the farmer? They have borrowed money from the farm credit bureau and the government supports it, so they buy into it, simple-minded folk, and then the government pulls the plug. Then the happy family farmer is a corporate farm that is now monopolized and now being controlled.

Next year, the initial conjunction, I believe, is at 26 degrees Sagittarius in February, then retrogrades and returns in July, then retrogrades and returns in November right at the point of the next election in this country. That is why you will find that the election in this country next time will be one of the most important political events in the modern era.

That is because the U.S., like it or not, is one of the most powerful countries in the world. If the conjunction is taking place at the center of the solar system, the galaxy, does this not symbolically suggest that the leader that we ought to be electing should be a centrist, one who can respect and incorporate all views, not an extremist, who by definition eliminates all views that are not in conformity with his own.

A Sagittarius, Paul Simon, is a centrist, the guy with the bow tie, the one they call a defacto Harry Truman. He was in Seattle a while ago. They like to call him a liberal, but he is a centrist, just look at his voting record. A centrist who would re-prioritize the excesses of the last administration, i.e. the infra-structure, rather than dedicating all these vast amounts of money to the delusion of Star Wars. Take all those potential billions and rebuild the infra-structure of this country. That would make a happier country.

The international outlook should be "unity in diversity" not unity in sameness which is a Reagan, Republican delusion. The conjunction in Sagittarius is a looking outward, whereas the introspection is Gemini. The U.S. chart has Gemini rising. There is also a reflection of Neptune in Capricorn's polarity in Cancer. That is why Gorbachev is trying to rebuild the internal structure of his own country and why he is so willing to cooperate in disarmament because this allows him to spend more money for his infra-structure.

Can't you see a world in which two countries like the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. simply say, "Yep, we're different!" "Fine!", and then join together to make global peace? Is it not just as possible to do that as it is to have some idiot go, "Evil Empire!". So why not elect a leader with such a vision when you have existing candidates with such a vision. Why not elect them? Use your power to vote.

If that kind of individual is elected and sets those kinds of priorities and policies in place, then the potential cataclysms that you all hear about will not happen. Conversely, if another like Reagan is elected (let's call him a person), then the probabilities for drastic scenarios increase.

So, this is what this new conjunction is trying to tell us. It is forming in Sagittarius. This is why we are seeing all these "communist" countries becoming more democratic - the essence of the Sagittarian archetype is democracy. The essence of the Capricorn archetype is authoritarianism or totalitarianism or theocracy, as you see in Iran, Neptune in Capricorn, Theocracy! These fools actually make statements like, "Iran is the country to implement divine principles". This is their statement, Neptune in Capricorn. What an insanity, Neptune. What a massive delusion, Neptune.

The issue of Neptune in Capricorn effects us in such ways as the fundamental right to bring religion into government. Reagan is trying to make tax breaks for segregated schools, and specifically schools that are religiously based. What about trying to bring prayer back into the schools, what about trying to dissolve the separation between church and state - all these things Reagan has tried to do.

The idiot, Jerry Falwell, and his Moral Majority, and the basis being fundamental Christianism, is an example of Neptune in Capricorn. What about trying to take away human rights that have been recently won, including abortion? This is somebody trying to impose their version of Christianity and morality on someone else. This is happening right now and is history repeating itself.

Neptune and Uranus were in Sagittarius through 1820 - the whole of Western Europe was moving toward democracy and new freedoms. For example, the Jew in France was finally considered an equal citizen. When Neptune and Uranus went into Capricorn in 1820, there was a return to authoritarianism. There was a removal of the rights that were just won. In this country there was a movement to make a double vote, i.e. for those who were wealthy, there was going to be a double vote. At that point in time, the democrats were described right in the happy history books as "republican democrats".

What do we see now? History repeats itself. The bottom line is that this conjunction happens next year and will be with us for 48-years with a maturity point 22-24 years after the conjunction. That is roughly 2010.

On a generational basis, each generation has a six-year life, each phase takes roughly six years to move to the next phase. That means millions of people are born with these various Saturn/Uranus phase relationships, i.e. new phase, crescent phase, and so on. So, just as we had those seed people bringing new values through the medium of music - those that had the new phase, those who had the crescent phase when they were born struggled to establish, remember the key words, and make real that which the seeds promote, and so on.....

A perfect example of this balsamic thing is that when Reagan got elected he had a thing called "The New Federalism". It went nowhere, but (as most of his things) the reality was that what he was trying to do was to make the state self-sufficient by decreasing federal monies to the state - trying to make each state responsible for its own reality - which, on a idealistic level, is fine, but, in terms of actual reality, i.e. there is qualitative difference between the state of affairs in Mississippi and New York State - and it became non-workable. That is a perfect example of that theme of self-reliance now brought all the way up to governmental potential policy.

The bottom line here is that when you look at it economically (Taurus does represent economics) that was the initial introduction of the military/industrial complex as a viable structure for supporting national economic policy. Eisenhower was the first, amongst all people, to warn against this. And what has Reagan done with it? Thrown billions at it to the point where the missiles can't even hit the planes they are shot at. That's a waste of money. That's balsamic. Think about that reality. Or sending this massive flotilla over there without mine sweepers. Billions of dollars later, the U.S. Navy has three mine sweepers from the Korean era.

So what I am trying to say is that, for whatever impact you have on people in your life, I suggest that you, as Socratically as possible (a Sagittarian message) plant these kinds of seeds, i.e. doesn't it seem reasonable that we should have a centrist now versus an extremist, who knows how far those seeds may travel. It seems to me that people who are trying to make the effort to evolve out of the status quo have some sort of responsibility to plant such seeds - but not in a Billy Graham-like way.

That is part of the Uranus in Sagittarius educational function which must now be brought to the status quo reality of Saturn transiting Sagittarius.

When you have a country that, from a white man's point of view, was basically won with a six-gun and you have somebody up there with their Marine-Corps uniform and doing all that crap that he did in a mesmerizing fashion like Reagan does, it appeals to certain crowds. But it is a regional thing. The people in the country admire North, while the people in the cities don't necessarily. The country is a Sagittarian dynamic. It's the same crowd that elected Reagan.

You know I was a movie major for a while in college and noted the way they held the camera: the camera angle was looking up at him. What does this symbolically say? At the same time, the camera was looking down on the questioners. What is the implication, the subtle message? That angle wasn't true for all those witnesses, was it? That wasn't done with Schultz, was it? Straight on. It's a good question who was behind the camera. Probably the same people who are running the government now that Reagan is on vacation.

Jeffrey: Mercury/Venus in a gibbous phase sesquisquare. Moon/Uranus in a last quarter square in the crisis in consciousness archetype. Do you want to play that game?

Audience: We want to play and you're it!
Jeffrey: Let's consider Moon/Saturn in a crescent phase septile. Ask yourself what the archetypal meaning of each symbol is and then synthesize them.

Audience: The Moon/Saturn is establishing your own authority with a cultural context. As you grow up and your parents show you what you limitations are and how to support the status quo....

Jeffrey: It represents that early family conditions that you are born into and the family status quo to which you are exposed which has a large impact on shaping your own sense of personal identity and how you are integrating into that society because of those family conditions.

Audience: Right! Then the crescent phase would probably cause the person to go inward and think about what their limitations are in that society. The struggle to establish your authority and your own identity in society. And then the septile would be that fated aspect, that sense of specialness, so they would be inclined - I'm not sure if they would be clear or confused as to what their own authority is.

Jeffrey: Their authority would be known through counterpoint awareness, i.e. by necessary withdrawing from external authority - the act of withdrawal causing awareness. That sets in motion the septile, the sense of having some special identity to fulfill. But it is a struggle to establish that. So that person, as a Soul program, sets in motion key events or circumstances in their life, the famous y’s in the road, to point them in the right direction That is when the struggle is most intense.

Audience: Is there a set time or number of years or lifetimes that a person has to be in this to start to recognize this?

Jeffrey: Every case is unique. The septile, as an example, can create and set in motion in some the gestation of that awareness that is not necessarily fulfilled - which then could be fulfilled perhaps at the next septile aspect, the biseptile experienced at the 104 degrees point. That could be the actualization of the concrete form that was gestated at the septile in the crescent phase. It could take place when the progressed Moon forms that 104 degrees aspect with Saturn. In this case, the Progressed Moon is going to form its own conjunction at the same time of the Saturn return.

How about Mars/Venus balsamic semi-sextile?

Audience: Wouldn't that aspect give a sort of a pleasant relationship between the two planets. However, it is sort of in its ending phase. It is nearing the end of this and should provide a lot of good, a pleasurable experience. It seems that it isn't going to last very long because it is at the end of that cycle and is getting ready to branch out and go into the new phase which would be the start of the new cycle.

Jeffrey: That's true. So what we have here is a culmination, where that person will attract, as part of their Soul program throughout their life all kinds of intimate connections which aren't necessarily sexualized, but at least intimate, with all kinds of individuals with whom they have had all kinds of prior life dealings with in which something needs to be finally finished. That is a primary theme. That can create the non-longevity factor that you are alluding to. The neat thing about it is that there can be a sense of understanding that that is exactly what has happened, i.e. that when it is finished, it is finished.

So, you are going to have a variety of types impacting on the individual's life who are reflecting what that individual itself has been over many lifetimes. With respect to that individual's own intimate need, if they are meant to be in a long-term thing, what we have found through our work here is that in general such a person tends to be involved in a long-term relationship with another balsamic Mars/Venus type.

The bottom line there is that they have already mutated away from the cultural stereotypes and defining principles of how to be in relationships. That being the case, they tend to need to be with someone else who is similarly oriented, i.e. balsamic. They can mould themselves to anyone, but in terms of being with someone with whom there is a fundamental simpatico, it tends to be another Mars/Venus balsamic type and/or that person having a dominant Piscean/Neptunian nature.

Audience: So the polarity - if they were not doing that right would be to try to fit into society's definition of relationships. They would try that and it wouldn't work.

Jeffrey: Right, that is the gibbous polarity. That would mean that they would try out all kinds of different relationships, because the issue of attracting diversity would be the same.

Audience: Is the idea that no matter what phase you are in or what kind of person you are that you will...
Jeffrey: Yes, but the challenge is to integrate the polarity relative to the phase that the two planets themselves are in. The problem is when the person tries to actualize the opposite polarity and integrate the phase, the two planets are within the polarity. That creates massive problems.

How about a Sun/Moon balsamic conjunction?

Audience: It seems like the integration of the life purpose on a daily basis seems too nebulous in this case, so near the end and so permeated with new possibilities that are coming up. I would think there would be a real state of confusion around the life purpose.

Jeffrey: It depends upon the individual. For example, my own brother, with a balsamic Sun/Moon both in Capricorn, with the Moon in the Third House and the Sun in the Fourth House with the midpoint being the Nadir with Neptune rising in Libra. He is a Zen priest in Japan and a recognized authority, Capricorn, because of it. He translated ancient texts, Third House Moon, with respect to common vernacular. That is how he found his purpose. Later on, however he mutated even out of that, because it is a culmination phase. That means that some of these people wear many hats, different identities, that they are culminating/finishing in this life.

Audience: What about beforehand, with your brother? Was he confused before he got or discovered this purpose, or did be just gravitate to it?

Jeffrey: Right. Even before it was fashionable, he was a religious studies major at the University of California down in California and got his credentials in religious studies and went from there to the Zen thing. Then he was apprenticing for a couple of years here.

Audience: So you are saying that there doesn't have to be that confusion.

Jeffrey: Right, it depends upon the evolutionary state.

Audience: So throughout your entire life long life of incarnations, you could have several balsamic Sun/Moons.

Jeffrey: Yes, until you understand why. Because the reverse extreme is for the Sun/Moon purpose to have no understanding of why they were even born. “What am I doing here?” is a common question. And they keep wearing many hats without knowing why they are wearing those hats. You simply have to tell them that the purpose that they are looking for is not an external phenomena, it's a balsamic phase, and it is within. By finding that meaning within, they can be wearing the hat happily for the right reason.

Audience: So they could fall into a gibbous delusion ....

Jeffrey: Right, as though the next hat is what their purpose or meaning is.

Audience: What if the orb is 11 or 12 degrees? It is coming into the conjunction but is not there yet.

Jeffrey: That is exactly what they are going to feel. Not quite there. Just accept it, take it as it is and the frustration attendant to it.
Audience: What if you have balsamic Sun/Moon and then all the other things are in new and crescent?

Jeffrey: As we said in the beginning, the various planetary pairings operate at various rates. Various aspects of your overall nature and various aspects of the evolutionary development.

Audience: The Sun/Moon seems to effect your whole life.

Jeffrey: It is a key issue because it is how one is actualizing one's purpose on a day to day basis. There are no wild cards.

The orbs are the full number of degrees on each side of the aspect. So a conjunction is 10 degrees on each side, an inconjunct is 5 degrees on each side (a total of 10 degrees), etc.

There should not, however, be hard and fast rules about orbs. Do your own thing with it. The arguments over orbs are as old as astrology itself. Let us glorify imperfection and non-precision.

Audience: I'm a good example of that. I have too wide an orb on my septile, and yet it has operated all my life. So, I just widen the orb.

Jeffrey: That's right. That's empirical proof.

Audience: How do you settle the question of a quincunx and a biquintile with a 1 degree orb and the quincunx has a 5 degree orb? If you have 145 degrees, which is it going to be?

Jeffrey: Take them both and look at the empiricism of the person's life. We don't impose astrological ideas on their realities, we just ask them about their reality. If it tends to reflect the essence of the tri-spetile as contrasted with a quincunx, well…am I going to say you are wrong and I'm right because my idea tells me.... Don't make a scientist out of us.

Audience: If you have a person who has a bi-quintile in the natal chart and they are actualizing that either consciously or unconsciously and really growing and you talk to this person at age 26 and then later, has it moved? In real actualization they are headed toward that inconjunct, and when you talk to them and you hear more inconjunct evidence, it could simply be that it has been that many years since the natal chart and are actually....

Jeffrey: Exactly, life evolves. It is not static. This is the greatest way to debunk all these so-called scientists who try to put down the phenomena of reincarnation. If there wasn't a transmigration of the Soul, why evolve? Why grow? Why be in the process of becoming, for what purpose? Why learn, if it is just one time around? Doesn't it logically, "scientifically", suggest that life itself would be static. You would have a fixed personality forever.

Audience: Especially when you are going to grow old and die and forget it all anyway.

Jeffrey: The best thing to do with scientists who want to argue with you is to turn their own arguments back on them. Then they get reduced to muddle. To the basic statement, "I don't know" and then they revert to their safe little ideas.

Audience: Is there a classic aspect for scientists?

Jeffrey: In our times, it is Gemini or Virgo. Gemini correlates to empiricism. Simply the phenomena of the human mind projecting itself outwards in order to give names to the phenomenal reality of Sagittarius. The human mind makes the boundaries. One step further is that the human mind creates the phenomenological object in space. However, there are also phenomenological objects in space that self-exist. Man created the lectern, did man create the tree?

Mercury in Scorpio/Jupiter in Taurus in full phase?

Audience: Would that be something that has been going along for a long time? It is obviously an opposition and it is maturing in the full phase. The intellectual and data gathering kind of mind is gathering even more to do with communication. And it is coming to a head and there might be tension between the two, but then that tension creates more possibilities of communication and for the intelligence to reach even more expanded levels.

It seems that this person might alternate between periods of having fixed ideas and opinionated kinds of stances with real intuition that penetrates very deeply and hits them hard, emotionally hard. Then they have to scurry back for security, but they are then changed.

Jeffrey: That is true and is this not the natural conflict now between the yin archetypes of Taurus and Scorpio and the yang archetypes of new phase and full phase.

Audience: Could you see this person as a very real philosopher of values?

Jeffrey: Yes, and an independent thinker who very likely confronts itself internally as well as externally.

Audience: I just flashed immediately on Nietzsche. I doubt if he had this chart, but I could see him having this configuration because of his constant questioning and also his concern with values.

Jeffrey: You can count any two pairs of phenomena, including the Ascendant or any other symbol. Right now, we are working with only the key planetary pairs in this class.
