Hi Gonzalo,

My sense is his Soul is about right in the middle of the 1st Stage Spiritual. Both you and Jason have done remarkable EA work concerning his natal Mercury and it's nodes.

Hi Jason, and Rad ...

Quote
With Mercury and its South Node in the 12th house and in Capricorn, this Soul has been and is continuing to develop its ability to mentally bridge form and formlessness, time and timelessness. His perception is attuned both to ultimate realities beyond mental constructs as well as the conditioned and constructed phenomenal reality of expressed as time and space. To take in particular the phenomenon of time, Mercury in the 12th and in Capricorn, with Mercury on its own South Node, also suggests he has been working on coming to terms with the phenomenon of Time itself. In the spiritual evolutionary condition, at some level he has begun to understand the arbitrariness of time …

This seems very accurate to me in that the Soul begins at 1st sub-stage spiritual (or even at the 3rd stage individuated) to have “glimpses” of the eternal, which by the end of the 1st sub-stage spiritual gives place to experiences of non-dual consciousness, which will progressively reveal the illusory nature of time in following EA stages … being in the middle of the 1st sub-stage spiritual, as Rad observed, Mercury in the 12th House Capricorn thus reflects the desire to understand the phenomenon of time, as you pointed out, and its relation to the eternal … in this sense, if I’m not wrong, Mercury’s correlation to breathing would indicate –being in the 12th House Capricorn-the type of meditation he will need to practice, based on concentration on breath progressively leading to the breath to stop, ie. 1-2 meditation …

Quote
… yet, because he has many experiences of not being understood and being in some way or another cast out and attacked, he can tend to take a very heavy-handed approach to time, insisting on the correctness of his own structure and getting steadily more and more rigid and entrenched when he is opposed, in part because he has tended to define his thinking in relation to how he thinks others perceive him, which he can be quite insecure about (Mercury in Capricorn; Saturn, ruler of Mercury SN and Mercury, in Cancer in the 7th house conjunct Cassandra and in grand cross with Chiron, Jupiter, and the nodal axis).  And instead of working to get very clear about who he is, to develop a sense of security that is deeply based inside (lunar north node, Saturn resolution node in 4th), this insecurity and the rigidity this situation creates (which then creates conflict which then creates more insecurity) drives him to try to take charge and again to get very identified with his own cosmology (SN in 10th, conjunct Jupiter).
But his relationship to time also has powerful possibilities: if he works to develop an internal security within himself about his own thinking process, and to be of genuine service to others (Mercury polarity in the 6th Cancer), rather than concentrating on being in charge or having it “together”, then he can access a powerful total disidentification with Time, yet also a powerful ability to make use of it.  In this sense he can be a true karma yogi, who can act with great mastery in the finite sense-world while maintaining an absorption in the infinite that allows a total detachment from the sense-world.

Mercury in the 12th and Capricorn also shows that his thinking has tended to be conditioned by an obligation he feels that it needs to be socially useful and relevant.  So on the one hand, his thinking process is naturally free and bridges beyond typical left-brain limitations, at the same time, there is a strong urge to be useful and to be recognized by the social collective as useful.
… where the problem has lied in trying along many lifetimes to be useful in ways that don’t reflect his inherent capacities and evolving Soul purposes … which occurred for several reasons, including reacting to lifetimes where the Soul chose an almost absolute seclusion, ie. the extremes between total seclusion and total immersion in social reality … (the Soul’s learning of how balance these extremes-South Node Libra-, which is a critical lesson with Pluto being in the 12th House) …

Mercury conjunct Venus shows that his mind tends to focus on what he has already decided is important.  He will probably organize his perception in such a way as to support the values he has, and his Mercury in crescent square to Jupiter shows that he is very concentrated in collecting information relative to the substantiation of his own belief system, with which he has become relatively identified in past lives (SN conjunct Jupiter).  He is trying to solidify this and again there is an insecurity and fear of failure related to this, so he will tend to develop his thoughts and ideas internally, go over them again and again, and then bring them out into the world, testing himself and others, somehow trying to get what he has to say across.  It is going to be hard for him to express these in part because much of what he has to say really transcends language and cannot be effectively captured by that means (12th house).

When he is successful in this, it is profoundly satisfying to him, he has a real need for validation and to feel special and unique (Mercury trine Moon in 5th).  The possibility exists, of course, for a kind of egotism developing out of this, and a feeling of being more intelligent than others, and therefore superior to others.  He can be pretty determined about getting this kind of attention and is vulnerable to getting stuck in this, it just comes so naturally to him and will be a real temptation to just hang out lazily in the experience of receiving attention from others.  He will definitely need to continuously break out of the “special” roles his mental capacity can generate for him, and to confront himself and penetrate to his core beyond all those roles, and let them go, again and again (Moon polarity point in Scorpio 11th), lest he get very identified with them.

Wow, hadn’t thought of using the Moon polarity point, but now it makes total sense to me …

Quote
Mercury conjunct Venus also suggests an elegance to his reasoning.  Higher mathematics would seem to be a potential gift – mathematics being a kind of language to describe the phenomenal world, and to convey through concepts such ideas as “infinity,” the mind attempting through elegant linear formulations to describe the non-linear world.  In particular geometries, the mathematics of form and shape (Venus), and from here it is easy to see the connection to the building and architecture (Capricorn) already discussed.

Mercury Venus conjunct and conjunct their own nodes as well shows that the Soul has been developing a kind of “aesthetic reasoning” for many lifetimes – along with Jupiter in Libra to which these are crescent square, there is a perceptual recognition of beauty and its connection to truth rather like Keats “Beauty is truth, truth beauty”.  This in part has to do with the Soul’s capacity to discern hidden (12th house) patterns of order (Capricorn) in what might appear random to others.   There could even be an element of synesthesia, either neurologically or simply in terms of metaphor, where the Soul perceives elements of reality through senses not typically associated with those (hearing colors, seeing sounds) – this could be connected to a deep connection to ultimate reality which makes sense vehicles irrelevant in some sense, but it could also be quite confusing and could result in distorted perceptions that confine him to his own reality, not understood by others.

… this is very interesting to consider … and, to me, connects with the mutability and adaptability of the Mercury archetype, and how this Mercury mutability/adaptability reflects the nature of the mutable cross within Zodiac, which includes Pisces … and which of course have a potential to manifest in the ways you point out when Mercury is in the 12th House or Pisces, etc.  It is well known that the brain creates neurological connections-synapsis (Mercury, Uranus)-which are far beyond the direct connections required for the brain functioning … which allow the brain to create simultaneous or alternative routes for synapsal communication … I suppose the specific case of synesthesia can be based on these alternative or anomal routes (12th House), allowing information within the brain to be received and processed by centers different than the ‘normal’ primary centers connected to a specific function or sense …

… the mutability of the Mercury archetype also connects to the fact it operates in a ‘context’, which is the totality of the phenomenal reality which is perceived by the Soul … including and compounding all types of phenomena, ie. whatever is within the perceptual field defined by the Soul will serve as the background for Mercury operation … this includes ‘external’ phenomena but also inner phenomena such as emotion, sensation, and pre-existing thoughts … this can manifest as thoughts that have the form of a physical sensation or perception which is being experienced at the same time the thought is manifesting ie., a flower in a tree in the garden is subconsciously within the perceptual field, then manifesting as a thought about any other thing but having the form or scheme of the flower … same thing with a sensation ….

Given that Mercury is conjunct Venus, which rules the South Node in Libra, and in turn is ruled by Saturn in the 7th -Libra House, we can know that extremes have existed in the Soul’s past relating to how much it has opened, or closed, its perception of phenomenal reality, for several reasons and manifesting several dynamics which we have been talking about … each part or selection having the possibility of being considered more than it really is, or given too much meaning (12th House), which of course implies that some other aspect or part of the phenomenal reality is not given enough consideration …. for some years Luciano manifested a quite dangerous combination of absent-mindedness and impulsive action, in which he could suddenly pass from an almost total stillness to jumping, throwing himself or start running in any unchecked direction, thus hitting himself many times against the walls, or other people, etc. …

Quote
The other possibility is of a kind of idealism that can occur as the Soul seeks information to confirm its belief that truth is beautiful – and a kind of escapism from the elements of truth which are not, in the limited eyes of the ego at least – beautiful.  The world could be perceived and arranged, and heard, through rose-colored glasses; again the Soul refusing to give these up when challenged for all of the reasons already discussed above.

The waning septile to Uranus in the 3rd, Pisces, shows that the Soul has been working to develop the relationship between the higher mind, and particularly its receptivity to vast amounts of cosmic information, and the linear left-brain mind.  He will, in this lifetime, have built-in fated experiences that assist him in keeping on track with that process any time he starts to veer out.  A great example is this very conversation: astrologers (Uranus) make sense of and name (3rd house) the reality of his past-life dreams (Pisces).  It is also interesting to consider that this entire conversation this week has taken place with transiting Chiron sitting on that Uranus exact by degree, healing in this area; and also with transiting Saturn conjunct his natal Pallas and square his natal Mercury, again both exact by degree, bringing greater structure to the understanding of his perceptual functioning.  And of course the symbolism around structuring an approach to healing that distinguishes and clarifies his special abilities and unique capacities (transiting Saturn biquintile transiting Chiron overlayed on the natal Pallas biquintile natal Uranus).

Well, I would want to share some of the conversation with Luciano about those lifetimes Rad told about in which he was a master builder … he said to me “dad, I really thank you for doing this for me (using his birthchart for our analysis here at the mb)” … he also asked how did I know about those lifetimes, so I said something like my EA teacher has some special very evolved gifts which allow him to see the actual lifetimes of a Soul … and then relate those lifetimes to the symbols in the birthchart … Luciano almost shouted (he was really impressed) “wow, that’s so incredible” … later he said “hey dad, you know what? … I believe what you told me, is true … “

Quote
Finally, Mercury is also at the pivot point in a T-square with Pallas in Libra in the 10th and Vesta in Aries in the 4rd.  To me this shows his thinking function in some way at the juncture of a powerful tension that his Soul carries relative to the the correct use of life-force/sexual energy/eros.  Both Pallas Athena and Vesta come to us through the patriarchy as virgins.  Pallas Athena redirects the sexual/life-current up through the spinal centers to the crown.  Vesta, in right relationship to the sexual function pre-patriarchy, would focus this same energy through the second chakra, however relative to the patriarchy this has been effectively blocked.  The opposition of Pallas and Vesta in the 10th and 4th houses respectively would suggest that the Soul has blocked its basic internal needs and drive for sexual connection and nurturance in favor of redirecting its energy to the psychic centers; this in fulfillment of a public role and a special destiny relative to the public which is very basic to the Soul (Pallas waning quintile Pluto).

… fascinating … this supports the correlation of Mercury Capricorn 12th House with both mysticism and mechanicism as potential manifestations, where the causal factor in such extreme thought orientations is sexual repression creating an excessive upward flow of energy that creates confusion, leading to idealization, where the dogmatic error of an external God gets confirmation because the body is being depleted of life energy, and, in the other extreme, creates an automated functioning in a world that lacks any meaning and is supposed to operate through the action of mechanic laws…

Quote
Mercury and its SN are in a crescent square relative to Pallas and a 3rd quarter square relative to Vesta.  This shows that on the one hand Mercury has been operating and will continue to operate to “map out” and understand, communicate, the psychic function, in some sense as an instrument of the same; at the same time, there is also a great deal of thinking taking place about the choices that have been made in terms of blocking the Vesta energy: a crisis in consciousness requiring new perspectives regarding personal sexual needs and desires, change of values, letting go of any conditioning that has been taken on in the process of being useful to the culture.

This is very useful, Jason, thanks so much for pointing this out …

Quote
His Mercury NN is in Aquarius in the 2nd house.  Right away we can see there is an evolutionary intention that his thinking function be put in the service of building a solid base of values and boundaries, for himself, through deconditioning from all of the conditioning the Soul has felt the contractions of, and been in reaction to.  This is strongly in accordance with the overall evolutionary intentions in the Soul to “incarnate” fully (Mercury NN trine PPP in 6th house).  Relative to the goddess T-square described above, this NN conjunct Juno and Neptune in the 2nd house also speaks of developing a totally new mental conceptualization of what we could call “spiritual relationship,” independent of any conditioning, i.e. the possibility of having fulfilling sexual relationships and still being spiritually awake and available.  The conjunction with the South Node of Neptune suggests this in part involves remembering past lives prior to the patriarchy where this was indeed the case (as per our Juno cosmograms) and there was not a false split between spirit and flesh.

The ruler of Mercury’s North Node is Uranus in Pisces, conjunct the South Node of Juno, reinforcing the statements above.  In addition, this Uranus in Pisces in the 3rd house involves participating more in the give-and-take of spiritual discourse, not having to be alone with his thoughts (12th) anymore, sharing in the context of spiritual groups for example.  Of course, this also shows that there is an evolutionary intention to decondition from rigidities and surrender to the interactive experience, rather than cling to beliefs and cosmologies which he had to do for reasons explained above.  This Uranus in Pisces also being quintile to his Pluto demonstrating that the evolution of his thinking process, and its “ventilation” – opening it up, exposing it, sharing it, in a way that is cooperative and not hierarchical (Capricorn) – is key to his accomplishing the special destiny the Soul has in this lifetime.

This is very important, and of course it also implies the need to discriminate reflected in the Pluto polarity point as to whom to share this type of conversation with, and with whom not … given the relativity of different Soul’s orientations and existing possibilities of understanding …

Thank you so much, Jason, for offering your analysis and the ongoing discussion ...

God Bless,

Hi Rad, and Jason …

Quote
“So if Mercury operates within a context in this manner, is this context defined by Jupiter/9th house/Sagittarius?  This would make sense to me, in the sense that beliefs and cosmologies condition what can be perceived and named.”

Personally, I’m not sure about which archetype(s) would directly define that context, ie. the phenomenal background in which Mercury creates the immediate linear connections, arrangements.

My feeling is that this context is defined by several layers, ie. planets, all of which interface among them in different ways, and create the specific reality that is experienced by the individual Soul (Pluto). The composite of all these layers, ie. the dynamics reflected in the birthchart, and the reality they create, are filtered by the egocentric structure of the Soul- the Moon, in order to create a focus of conscious awareness for the Soul within the overall reality of diffuse images. Cancer being opposed to Capricorn implies at this level that the creation of an ego by the individual Soul is conditioned by the soul’s a specific structure of consciousness, relative to the plane of manifestation: material world when incarnated and the astral world before birth or after death (in both of these planes the Soul has an ego-Moon- and a Mercury function of thought and communication, which despite being different from the thought/language in the incarnated consciousness because of this being conditioned by space/time, both ‘realms’ of Mercury operations implying some type of linear arrangement or selection within the total reality experienced by the Soul).

Thus, the Mercury function is conditioned by the structure of the individual consciousness. Within the incarnated existence, the Soul will normally know or experience the inner and outer phenomenal reality through the direct functions of Venus-sensation, feeling, and Moon/Pluto-emotion, and then linear thought arrangements concerning the survival and security needs of a progressively self-conscious ‘ego’, ie. the adaptative mutable function of Mercury manifesting in a species that became self-conscious, created languages, culture, societies, and regulations, etc. which again condition in varying degrees the context in which the individual Mercury operates. Jupiter correlates with beliefs which filter what can be considered as real. At same time, the function of Jupiter continuously interfaces with the Mercury operation, in the interchange of information and patterns that organize this information, at several levels, such as the organization of the perceptual stimuli, and “data”, or in abstract thought, etc.

Further, the Soul has the inherent capacity to create and recreate memories, ie. experiences which are beyond the incarnated Soul’s space time reality (Uranus and Mercury-long and short term memory), and to create and recreate images through imagination (Pisces). At same time, a large part of this context normally is not fully conscious for most Souls. And yet, Mercury is also creating some order in which the subconscious contents are manifesting in the awareness (for example: I may not be aware in a moment of the sensation of my foot on the floor, but the nervous connections (Mercury) exist in my body that are communicating sensorial data to my brain, which is creating a sensation which is then projected to that part of the body; the sensation is potentially within my conscious awareness, and I can manifest a thought involving the sensation of my foot); unconscious can condition the nature of the thoughts and language that the Soul manifests (as Freud revealed in his analysis of the lapsus linguae, and jokes), and Mercury can also communicate to conscious awareness (Moon) contents that are in deeper levels of the subconscious (Pluto), either in dreams or in waking states, etc.

In any moment in time, the Soul’s immediate circumstantial reality is defined by a varying combination of these aspects of experience, or layers, which interface within consciousness, in forms that are different for each individual Soul in each ongoing moment.

Rad, Jason, does this make sense? My feeling is that it makes sense, but also that there may be another level in which the answer to this question may be more simple…

Quote
“Yes, thank you for describing that about how the body is depleted of life force by the “up and out” orientation, thereby reconfirming the mistake of an external God, and the disdain for the flesh – this is something I often see when energy is being moved in this way, very useful to frame with clients.

Wilhelm Reich wrote about that in a book called “Ether, God and Evil”, where he describes how, according to his own investigations and theories about the orgone, the thought orientations he calls mechanicism and mysticism, are conditioned by the energy block at the pelvic area or segment, resulting of patriarchal sexual and emotional repression. I quote this with the feeling it is ok to make reference to an author that is quite aligned or convergent with the EA perspective in some specific aspects, such as natural sexuality from a biological point of view, and the effects of patriarchal conditioning at an individual and collective level (keeping in mind that Reich was a scientist and relative to his evolutionary condition which I would say was 3rd stage individuated …).

Thanks so much for the ongoing discussion, feedback, and guidance

Hi Gonzalo,

Yes, all makes sense. It is the 9th House, Sagittarius, and Jupiter that all correlate to the nature of the phenomenal reality of the Creation.

Hi Rad, Jason, Gray, and anybody else who is interested in this thread …

I feel there is much more we could say about Luciano’s Mercury, and have had a few insights, and a couple of questions, though, I have not been able to articulate them clearly up to date …

By now, I thought of attempting an analysis of Mercury in the birthchart of Chile …. So, I am now posting an initial analysis to begin with, and, If there is interest, perhaps we could go deeper … if there is no interest in this ‘mundane’ Mercury, then we can move forward to some other individual birthchart ….

Thank you so much for your ongoing participation in this thread,

God Bless,

Gonzalo

*************************************************************************
In the “natal chart” of Chile, Mercury is in the 11th House, Libra (Aquarius is also on the 3rd House cusp). Given that Mercury correlates with thinking, it also correlates at a mundane level, among other things such as communications, to people who think, and people who study, ie. the intellectuals, and students (and I think it correlates in general with young people).

Natal chart of Chile

On 11 September 1973, when Pinochet took control of the country and initiated a dictatorship which lasted for 17 years, the transiting nodes were squaring the nodal axis of the country, with transiting Saturn conjunct the transiting South Node, while transiting Pluto was conjunct the natal North Node. Also, transiting Uranus was conjunct the natal Mercury, and transiting Chiron opposed that Mercury.

-natal chart of Chile with the transits on 11 September 1973-

Of course, the transiting Uranus conjunction to natal Mercury in the 11th House correlated with massive collective trauma affecting intellectuals and students in this country. There are two complementary official reports which, despite being incomplete, provide some information about the men and women, who were directly affected by the military in the most horrible ways*

* I am not sure how about many people in general, and how many of us here at this sacred place know the types of things that occur in concentration camps …. I have been reading about this, and it is so horrifying and evil, that one would want not live on this planet anymore, or not be a part of this species. It is literally beyond imaginable. I don’t think everybody should know about this. Perhaps some people, and some of us here, may need to know.

These are the official numbers of young age “victims”

Rettig Report:

Younger than 16 years old:           49             2.1%

Between 16 and 20 years old:       269         11.8%

Between 21 and 25 years old:       557            24.4%

Between 26 and 30 years old:         512        22.4%

(The indicated percentages relate to the total affected people referred to in this reports).

Valech Report (these numbers refer to other groups of affected people not comprised in the prior Rettig report):

Younger than 18 years old*:        1.080      4%

Between 18 and 21years old:         2.639      9,7%

Between 21 and 30 years old:         12.060   44,2%

*People younger than 18 included 766 people between 16 and 17; 226 people between 13 and 15; 88 people being 12 years old or younger.

I think these figures, relative to the transits mentioned before, confirm the correlation between Mercury and young people...

A question would be: why were students, and young people, tortured, assassinate and disappeared? A simple and obvious answer can be given without recurring to astrology, or to EA: because these people were, to some degree, thinking by themselves, and questioning the values and interests of groups in power or privilege, in ways which threatened the power of the groups who wanted to maintain their control in the economy, and their privileges. It simply didn’t matter that they were young.

If we consider each of the individual cases, we can know from EA spiritual perspective, that there are no victims. In many cases, these were really incredible people, really beautiful Souls, men and women. Each one of them had their own reasons to gravitate to these experiences. I suppose that, in many cases, there was no “proportion” between their karma/evolutionary need-combined so many times with the compulsion to repeat pre-existing traumas, and what they received in return. I also suppose that this lack of proportion was created by the influence of evil on the agents of dictatorship. Other factor can be the progressive distortion of emotional desires to take revenge, which existed in the souls of such agents.

Why were these students, and young people, tortured, assassinate and disappeared? While the individual answer to this question is contained in the birthcharts of each of these people, there must be some type of general answer contained in the birthchart of Chile. Currently, transiting Saturn approaches to conjunct the natal Mercury in this chart, while transiting Pluto/Mars exactly square the nodal axis with transiting Uranus exactly conjuncting the South Node:

At same time, chilean students are now conducting a large social movement that implies, not only a reform of education, but also indirectly imply the necessary changes allowing such reform, ie. budget, taxation, etc.

For this, it seems critical to me to understand what are the collective dynamics and the roles of the students in this country, as reflected in the birthchart of Chile from the EA point of view, in order to know: are these Souls going to undergo such type of ‘repression’? Is this society preparing to repeat this collective trauma?  (as an example, the main leader of the current student’s movement has her South Node in Virgo, with the planetary ruler, Mercury, Full phase opposition to Pluto Rx in Scorpio, which is First Quarter square to Mars in Aquarius … the planetary ruler of the North Node is Neptune, which is Balsamic conjunct Uranus/Saturn, both Rx, in Capricorn, both squaring the nodal axis …. both opposing Venus/Chiron in Gemini, also squaring the nodes).

In the birthchart of Chile, Pluto is in the 4th House, Rx, in intercepted Pisces. The South Node is in the 5th House, Aries, and the planetary ruler, Mars, is in the 10th House, in Leo.

These symbols clearly reflect the zarathustra complex defining the families in power in this country, their deluded self-image and their desires to be on top of the pyramid of their created reality, with exclusion of the interest of everybody else. This is an extremely individualistic society (South Node in Aries, 5th House, planetary ruler in Leo, in the 10th House). The privileges of this group of people have been created, and maintained many times in the history of this country, through the use of violence against. Historian Mario Góngora has said that the armed forces have been the spinal column of institutionality along chilean history.

The natal chart of a country, similar to birthcharts of individuals, reflects the conditions form the past that shape the moment in which the country as such is born. Thus, it reflects the vibration of the moment in which the country is born, and the archetypical dynamics creating such vibration, which results of the conditions of the past which originate the country. It is such vibration, and such archetypical dynamics, as defined by the conditions being brought from the past, that will condition the process of becoming of the country along its history. At same time, the natal chart of a country will reflect the archetypical EA dynamics that will allow an evolution of the conditions from the past, and the vibration of the country, to its potential future. In other words, it is the archetypical dynamics defining the past, and potential future of a country, that will create the vibration that exists in such country, which will attract the Souls incarnating in the country. Thus, the vibration of the Souls incarnating in a country, conditioned by their own dynamics resulting from their individual evolution, is the basis why such Souls will tend to recreate the vibrational nature, and dynamics of the country.

What is, then, the past that conditioned the creation of the country named Chile?

Pluto Rx in the 4th House Pisces speaks of Souls which are defined by an essential insecurity, and fear of the unknown. Souls who don’t feel at home, or that are or feel homeless. Also, Souls who have been creating fundamental illusions about themselves, in order to compensate their insecurity and homelessness. In fact, history reveals that the vast majority of Spanish conquerors that reached this land, beginning in the first half of the XVI century, were homeless people and bandits in Spain. Thus, they embraced the “adventure” of coming to America because they did not see any perspectives of “getting ahead” in their own society. And the idea of coming to America fueled their imagination and their desires of becoming wealthy, and powerful, very quickly. Around 1550 it became more or less clear to these men that the treasures, ie. accumulated gold, only existed in some places in America: Peru, Guatemala, Mexico. Thus, only a few of these Spanish people saw their dreams of quick wealth come true. Vast groups of conquerors become disillusioned, and soon discovered that actualizing their desires would take much longer, and much more work: direct looting would not be enough, because apart from Peru, Guatemala, and Mexico, indigenous people did not have the type of wealth the Spanish desired, ie. gold. Pluto is in the 4th House, Pisces, Pluto South Node is in the 2nd House, and its planetary ruler, Saturn, is in the 12th House, conjunct Neptune in the 12th House, Neptune/Saturn being in a disseminating square to Pluto.
The dream of the quick wealth was, though, maintained at a subconscious level, manifesting in several ways.

One way this dream manifested was through the creation of myths of hidden cities were it was still possible to find large quantities of gold: El Dorado, Pacha Pulai, The City of the Caesars, Cofralandes, the City of Priest John, Paititi, etc. The most relevant manifestations of such dream, though, has been along the centuries the interface of local economy with international markets, and in more general terms, the intensity of the desires of making large amounts of money through the same basic orientation to looting.
It is very important to understand that the desire to become wealthy of these people compounded with the desires of their political and religious authorities: the kings of Spain and the catholic popes (Neptune/Saturn in the 12th House, square Pluto). Spanish conquerors were given by the pope, through the king of Spain, the “right” or “titles” to conquer this land and become lords over the indigenous peoples. The “bulas” issued by the popes stated that Jesus was the owner of this planet (!), and that Jesus himself had given the roman pope the property and administration of Earth… There existed an enormous volume of theological elaboration at several stages of the process of conquest, which had the intention of granting and justifying the right of the Spanish conquerors for the ongoing spoliation of the land, the enforced labour of the indigenous people, and the right to make war against the rebellious indigenous peoples. In turn, the king of Spain and the conquerors were given the duty to indoctrinate the indigenous people with Catholicism. It should be noted that a part of such theological and juridical elaboration was in fact created for the protection of the indigenous peoples against the excessive violence of the Spanish. Though, such regulations were rarely complied with by the conquerors in America, specially in very remote places at that time such as Chile: the formula used by local Spanish authorities was taking the parchments with the regulations issued by the king or the vice-king, putting them on top of their heads, and saying: “it shall be obeyed, but not complied with”. This “double standard” appears reflected in the Neptune/Saturn in Sagittarius 12th House opposition to Jupiter in the 6th House Gemini. This type of duplicity defines the relationship of the ruling elites in this country with law in general. Indeed an extremely legalistic country, in which law is applied with full force to the common people, where the enforcement of the law is considered a value in itself … but where large corporations, powerful people, or the government, etc., are above the law, in direct or indirect ways. For example, courts of justice don’t comply with labor regulations of their own workers; very elaborate environmental regulations exist in Chile, though, they are used to create a simulacrum of legality of whatever mega-projects impacting natural resources; many gross examples can be given of this duplicity. In few words, the law, and religion, have been used to subjugate the people, and to make them feel they are being subjugated for the right reasons. This double standard is also reflected in Mars in the 10th House, Leo: rampant hypocrisy. With Neptune/Saturn in the 12th House Sagittarius, opposing Jupiter in the 6th House Gemini, is should be clear that this country does not operate under a “Rule of Law”, but, rather, by factual power (South Node in the 5th House, Aries, Mars in the 10th House, Leo: personalistic leaders or groups that have, literally, taken the power by different means.

Following the realization that wealth was not easily within reach, these bandits, that had become soldiers, had now to become entrepreneurs, in order to create the conditions for their own survival. Of course their entrepreneurial orientation was to exploit the indigenous to the maximum possible degree. It has to be kept in mind that the Spanish coming to America, and Chile, were men, ie. very very few women came from Europe in this period. For this reason, and because of this people’s orientation to work, they would not kill all the indigenous, as it occurred in North America by the English settlers. Spanish would capture large numbers of indigenous people, men and women, for work and for sex/reproduction. Thus was the Chilean people formed along the centuries.

Given that the Spanish conquerors desired to be wealthy according to the European parameters, as quick as possible, and because of the geographic confinement of this land (“a large and narrow band of land” between the mountains and the ocean) the process of accumulation of wealth was naturally very slow. Hence, while some individuals and groups would focus on the development of a local economic production, other individuals and groups would orientate to introducing the local production in whatever commercial paths were possible: initially to Peru, later to other centers of the Spanish conquest in America, and later to Europe. Because these individuals were defined by their individual self-interest-South Node in Aries, Mars in Leo-the relationship between producers and merchants was not defined by collaboration, but, instead, by a conflict of interests. This conflict seems to be reflected in the Saturn/Jupiter opposition, with Jupiter in Gemini. This conflict has permeated the story of this country until present days. Thus, the country has alternated between periods where an orientation to create an industrial autonomy of the local economy has been embraced, which have then been overridden by periods in which all the economy has relied on exportations of agricultural products or natural resources (in chronological order: small amounts of gold from river panning; fat and tallow; wheat; saltpeter; copper). The last period with a dominant industrial orientation ended when Allende was removed from government in 1973. The interplay of these two orientations-productivism and merchantilism, together with the strict control on the property of the land that has existed since the beginning of the Spanish occupation, has created many times, along the last 550 years, massive changes in the working conditions, and hand labor requirements. The reason for these changes, and this conflict, lies in the fact that intermediaries (merchants) have dictated the prices of the goods in the interchange, rather than buyers, and this has required enormous increases in the amounts of goods/raw materials produced, and, at same time, a proportional reduction of the costs of production. Thus, generations of workers have been exterminated, or almost, because of the working conditions that have been deemed “necessary” in order for owners/producers and merchants to satisfy their greed. At same time the conditions created by this conflict have stagnated the industrial development of the country at several key points of its development.

The above process is far more complex than what I wrote, but for the purpose of this analysis I would like to keep it simple.

The Neptune/Saturn conjunction in Sagittarius in the 12th House square Pluto, with the South Node in the 5th House Aries, and Mars in the 10th House Leo, also reflect very graphically the conditions that triggered the independence: the king of Spain being made prisoner by Napoleon, who appointed his brother, whose nickname was Joey Bottle because of his like of drinking, as King of Indies, served as the causal factor for the local elites to embrace their desires for an independent government. The rationale was that they owed obedience to the king, and not to any of the agencies of the king that existed in America. Here, the duplicity reflected in the Neptune/Saturn opposition to Jupiter, etc., manifested in that the foundation act of this country was in fact a declaration of loyalty and obedience to an external authority: the King, who was imprisoned in Spain.

The same symbols reflect in general the role that beliefs, man-made law, catholic religion and ideologies, have played in shaping this country.

With the Pluto polarity point being in the 10th House, Virgo, and the North Node being in the 11th House, Libra, it seems clear that the collective desires that would allow collective evolution of this country would imply the need of this society to assume responsibility for itself, and for the needs of all the people who are part of this society, through creating a progressively egalitarian society. The North Node planetary ruler, Venus, being in the 12th House, Scorpio, would imply a necessary transformation of collective values.

I feel the above described context would allow to understand the natal Mercury in the 11th House, Libra. Mercury is the ruler of the Jupiter/Moon conjunction, and Jupiter is the ruler of the Neptune/Saturn conjunction. At different levels, this Mercury reflects:

- The extremity (Libra) of ideas and ideologies defining diverse groups in the country, ranging between extremely conservative (11th House) to extremely revolutionary (11th House);

- That because of the rampant hypocrisy of the ruling class, the working class (Moon in the 6th House) has been relatively permeable to revolutionary ideas. However, because of the duplicity that has defined this collective story, and because of the traumas that have existed for the groups of rebels at several junctures of chilean history, the support and compromise of the working class with these ideas, has also been dual (Note that the social support of Allende’s government was in rise before the coup; though, after the coup, nine years had to pass before chilean society began manifesting a consistent opposition to dictatorship; society was until then, in a state of denial about the unspeakable violations of human rights that were occurring: people were dominated by fear, and by what Diego Portales had called in the 1830’s “the weight of the night”, ie. passivity and submission to established power).

- The alienation (11th House) from most people from what is occurring in social reality (11th House, and Virgo-Mercury ruled-intercepted in the 10th House).

- The way this alienation is so easily promoted by the ruling elites, through the control of the media, in a country where independent media is almost totally inexistent, because it has been exterminated when it has existed (Mercury ruled by Venus in the 12th House, in Scorpio, in turn ruled by Pluto in the 4th House).

- The demagogy of certain strongmen and political leaders, and the susceptibility of this society to demagogy (Mercury in the 11th House, ruling the Moon in the 6th House; this Mercury is conjunct the South Node/Neptune conjunction of president Piñera, in his 11th House Libra, with the planetary ruler of his South Node, Venus in his 3rd House Capricorn, relative to his Pluto in the 10th House Leo, which is part of a grand trine involving the Moon in his 5th House Aries, and the Sun in the first House -he is not only a demagogue, but at same time a “businessman” who has used social conflict to hide the business he is doing … the bigger the conflict, the bigger the business he is doing behind the scene).

- The extreme collective traumas (11th House, Libra), that have impacted the groups of intellectuals and rebels that have promoted social change (this Mercury is ruled by Venus in Scorpio conjunct Uranus in the 12th House, ie. concentration camps).

Given the current transits mentioned before (Saturn approaching the conjunction to natal Mercury; Pluto/Mars exactly square the nodal axis; Uranus exactly conjuncting the South Node), I feel the answer to the question “are students currently in danger?” would necessarily be “yes”.

The polarity point of Mercury being in the 5th House, Aries, implies the evolutionary need for these groups, and the individuals part of these groups, to independently actualize their individual roles within the social processes, versus maintaining an idealized sense of identity which is dependent on the group associations. (Mercury in the 11th House, ruler by Venus in the 12th House).

I hope, if there is interest, that we will be able to add more about this Mercury. By now, I would like to ask one question: would the North Node of Mercury being in the 10th House, Virgo, imply that the students are currently required, in evolutionary terms, to embrace their desires of necessary social changes within the context of the existing structures, instead of trying to promote changes that totally challenge the existing structures (despite how miserable these existing structures are)? … I feel very reactionary when thinking this is necessary, but it is what this symbol suggests to me …. Any thoughts on this are very welcome ….

Hi Rad, Jason …

First, thanks for not responding to my post about the chilean students … despite how serious and dangerous it is what is going on with these Souls in my country- similar to what is going on with so many groups of people in many places in the planet right now- I am accepting that the work I have to do is not mundane astrology, nor political activism … but, instead, to work with individual Souls, and specially traumatized Souls, as Rad told me two years ago in this mb … so, my ongoing focus in understanding Mercury should also be on understanding the individual thought function within consciousness …

Second, think I finally am able to articulate one more thought about Luciano’s Mercury … Mercury in the 12th House in Capricorn reflects the interface between attention and perception, ie. how the attention determines the selection within the phenomena of that which will be perceived, and that which will not be perceived … I don’t think these correlation is absolute or specific to these archetypes, but they could manifest in some specific ways with Mercury being here … In terms of the gestalt psychology, that which is perceived creates or is arranged as a “figure”, and that which is not perceived will be pushed to the “ground” or “background” …  I think that attention on itself correlates with Scorpio and Capricorn, and the ground on itself correlates to Sagittarius and Pisces, ie. the context … with Mercury being in the 12th House, in Capricorn, the potential exists in which the Soul can become too absorbed in whatever perceived or pre-existing pattern, because of how perception has been conditioned in the past (Capricorn) … manifesting a fear of dissolution (Pisces) of these perceptual patterns … I did the experience of showing Luciano a series of  reversible figures (those drawings which have been designed in such a way that the figure and the ground can be reversed, so that the figure becomes the ground and the ground becomes the figure) … and the first time he did not see the figures reversed, and he needed some guidance to begin seeing the reverse figures  …  alternatively, or at same time, Mercury in Capricorn 12th House can manifest in an opposite way, ie. as creating a difficulty in defining the borders of the figure or pattern, manifesting as not perceiving the pattern, ie. some type of astigmatism, either at a perceptual level, or at the level of thought …

Further, given the past lifetimes involvement of Luciano’s Soul with architecture, these symbols correlate specifically with a type of very well designed forms which have the potential to absorb and contain the ground-so to speak- through their capacity, because of the exactness of their shape, to capture the attention of the observer … this translates in specific types of forms and constructions which contain a “monumentality” in themselves, ie. forms which, despite their actual size-which can be quite small-can be perceived as being big or enormous … this type of forms can ‘capture’ the attention of the observer and produce a very powerful perceptual shift through which the small form ‘grows’ to the point it becomes or is perceived as big or even enormous …

the only written reference I’ve ever found to this phenomena is Carlos Castaneda. In some of his books he speaks about the rock sculptures called the ‘atlantes’, created by the ancient Olmecs at Tula … and also speaks about some perceptual exercises involving a series of objects-a stone, a mosquito, a piece of cloth which-because of having ‘power’ (concentrated intent), was pushed to the background and perceived by Castaneda as a mountain. My impression is that the monumental constructions that were built at sacred places such as Gobekli Tepe, Puma Punku, Tiwanaku, etc., were indeed designed according to such type of precise definition of the borders between figure and background, allowing this type of perceptual shift.
This symbolism implies, among other things, that concentration on any thoughts produces a magnification of these thoughts, and the ‘reality’ to which they relate, ie. gravity or seriousness (Capricorn) making things become or appear to be more real or ‘bigger’ than what they are.

Well, this is all I have by now! … And I am not sure whether I will post some other example chart before November, because of my concentration requirements at this point in time.

God Bless,

Gonzalo

Hi Gonzalo,

Really enjoyed your 'thoughts' concerning your son. I would hope you decided to continue this thread and create some other examples that simply involve the relationship between a natal Mercury and it's Nodes, and linking this to the ongoing evolutionary necessity of any given Soul.

Hi Jason,

"I would be interested in knowing from you and Rad if this makes sense to apply this in this way."

Yes it does Jason.

Hi Rad, and Jason …

Jason, thanks for your comments. This discussion is really very interesting, and I hope there will be time to go deeper in understanding the correlations and how they interrelate in different ways …

Further comments …

Quote
“In terms of gestalt figure/ground relationships, to me this again seems like the mutable cross, where Gemini and Virgo describe perception of the "figure", i.e. Gemini's "naming" things, distinguishing "this is this" and "that is that" -- I think of a dear 2-year-old I met this weekend who kept pointing to objects and saying, "fan", "juice", "toast", "chair", etc.  And Virgo's analysis, analysis itself involving breaking down things into their constitutive parts to achieve accurate perception.  Whereas, Sagittarius and Pisces describe perception of the "ground", the context against which such figures are perceptible.”

I can add that even within the mutable cross, Gemini (following Taurus) correlates with perceptual data, and specifically with information, where increasing amounts of perceptual data or information also creates a ground, which is progressively unformed, conflictive and confusing (Gemini square to Pisces), where Sagittarius correlates to the pattern, implied order, or gestalt providing the arrangement for the information. A right brain function. Perception of pattern is quite intuitive, and inductive, rather than deductive. It can also be abductive, ie, using intuition as a means to create alternative possibilities of patterns that could fit the data, which are then checked by deduction or linear reasoning or perceptual verification. Thus, a collaboration between right and left brains.

Quote
“About attention as a Capricorn/Scorpio function, I am not clear about this.  Maybe I do not understand how attention is defined here.  I can see how Scorpio with the "eagle eye" perception involves distinguishing figure from ground in a certain way; but I can also see this with Virgo discrimination and detail analysis -- both of these signs being the natural inconjuncts, i.e. crisis to induce understanding/analysis.  But the word attention does not seem fully clear here, it seems to me those are ways of attending, but one can as easily attend to other things as well.  It seems like attention is described by all signs, in terms of what they are attending to or how they attend.  The attention of Capricorn being on what's appropriate/right/expected, the attention of Scorpio being on causation, power, depth, the attention of Aries on the discovery of the self, etc.  I don't see how attention itself is described by any one archetype, rather it seems they all describe what the Soul has attended to in the past or intends to attend to in this lifetime.  But again, I may be missing your meaning."

I would say attention is a direct manifestation of desire, or intent, ie. Pluto, Scorpio. Same thing with concentration, as ‘power’ of concentration: we focus on what we desire to focus, and the intensity of attention, and concentration, is a reflection of the intensity of desire. Thus, a Plutonian archetype. Before this, on itself attention is a manifestation of consciousness, ie. Pisces, Neptune. Consciousness can be quite diffuse or un-focused-Neptune-where Pluto reflects the desire that creates the focus … including the egocentric focus which is Cancer, and the Moon …. Further, concentrated attention implies an stabilization of attention, ie. earth archetype. Within the earth archetypes, Capricorn correlates with determination, thus the correlation with a determined focus on anything. (added later) This also connects with gravity, which operates through gathering together of something which is disperse - in order to create a form or structure, creating a place within time space, a local reality ... in turn, the local reality determines a specific manifestations of universal laws ... thus, on another level, it is the collective-social concentrated intent at specific perceptual bands-so to speak-  that conditions perception and the giving of names to objects in the phenomeal reality (Mercury)... . At same time, i also think concentration and attention can operate or manifest thorugh the other archetypes, as you mentioned ... I get the fundamental point you raised when proposing that other archetypes could correlate to other ways of 'attending' ... which is exceedingly relevant from an uranian point of view, relative to patriarchal conditioning of how social reality is constructed ... and I agree that attention can be put in other ways which are not defined by concentration, for example, just witnessing the flow of experience ... which on itself would not be defined by Caprircorn, but instead by Aquarius ... and at some level I supose attention would correlate with just Scorpio and Pluto, and further, by Pisces and Neptune  ... (added even later) thus, at this point in the reasoning I was following I see that a total diversification has been introduced in the correlations of 'attention', in which each archetype can correlate with different ways of attending, and where don't see which would be specific role of Capricorn and Saturn ! Thanks, Jason ...

Also ... it (still) seems to me that Capricorn correlates specifically with the borders.

About not pursuing the chilean students post, well, other reason is that having Uranus 3rd House sesquisquare Saturn 10th House, me and my mouth do have the potential to create more traumas for myself and others.

Rad, I will try to post a series of examples of Mercury and its nodes. I will post two examples to start with.

Thanks so much for all your feedback and the ongoing discussion, and please let me know if what I am now posting is on track.

God Bless,

Gonzalo

Example 1. Let’s say Mercury is conjunct its own South Node, and both Mercury and its South Node are in the 1st House, in Cancer. Mercury North Node is in the 12th House, in Gemini. Let’s suppose the individual is in the 2nd stage individuated condition.

Let’s say that within the 2nd stage individuated the individual has openly embraced a new cycle of self-discovery which is independent from the consensus of its society. Thus, the individual has desired to think by itself, and has given itself the right to pursue an exploration of new ideas, ideas belonging to the avant-garde within the society or culture, and ideas that directly challenge the existing assumptions that define the consensus. Thus, the individual has rebelled against the ideas that conditioned its own evolutionary past, and against the prevailing ideas of his/her society. The individual has needed to create for her/himself a new series of experiences (1st House), in order to create new ways to understand overall reality. For this to occur, the individual has felt an instinctual attraction to sets of ideas, and people associated with these ideas, reflecting her/his own rebellion against the consensus. Whatever these new ideas have been, the individual has felt its own sense of identity and special destiny is linked with the nature of these ideas. Because of the felt importance of these ideas in the ongoing self-discovery, the individual has compulsively desired to communicate only in her/his own terms, in order not to have  its emerging feeling of independent identity lost in midst of the thought and communication forms of others.

This has operated in an instinctual way, ie. without any meditated elaboration; the individual has desired to have quick and sharp answers to whatever question or situation. Thus, she/he would be communicating its own thoughts in a very direct and aggressive ways, potentially threatening the thought structures of other people, even before he/she has really understood what these other people think or say. This of course is a reflection of the resistance of the individual to being defined or restricted by any thought forms of others that could absorb its sense of identity in discovery. Thus, the thought forms, and the communication forms of the individual, will potentially manifest anger, and rage, and so will the types of ideas to which the individual will be instinctually attracted. At this evolutionary stage (2nd stage individuated), the gravitation to new ideas is fundamental, because they will promote the ongoing self-discovery and liberation from consensus identity associations. Thus, the potential exists in which the individual can become attached to the importance of the set of ideas that are leading this process at any point in time. Also, because the individual at this stage is in a process of becoming a minority, which will lead to becoming a group of one further on the road, she/he has needed to associate to groups of like-minded individuals that are equally alienated from society as she/he is. At same time, the individual needs a fundamental freedom to change her/his mind, in order for this ongoing discovery to occur. Thus, the individual will create the necessary experiences which will allow her/him to discover new key pieces of information, and new forms of linearly arranging the nature of his/her perceived reality, ie. new points of view. With Mercury being in Cancer, the individual is also learning to linearly understand who/she is, according to its own point of view, and to speak in its own name. This will allow to create a basis of linear understanding for emotional self-knowledge to occur at some point. In order to accomplish these intentions, the individual will create instinctual attractions to thought forms and systems of knowledge which, despite promoting the necessary separation from consensus, will not reflect the true needs of the individual, or her/his inherent nature. At this stage, the potential exists that the individual will override its own insecurity through the association with the current system of ideas, and with other people which are also defined by these ideas. With Mercury being in the 1st House, at the current evolutionary stage, the impulse is to act with basis on the ideas without an elaborated consideration, rather than thinking before acting. In time, these thought forms will induce necessary turns in the ongoing intellectual exploration: new ideas will manifest in conscious awareness promoting new directions allowing for new linear arrangements to occur. With Mercury being in the 1st House, in Cancer, the possibility exists for the individual not to follow the new directions, because of the role the prior ideas have played in its self-definition with independence from consensus, and its new identity associations in relation with his groups of peers, ie. how these ideas have provided a relative feeling of security within the existing alienation from consensus. Thus, the existing ideas of the individual at any point in time can prevent the individual from collecting useful information from the environment, ie. information that would promote the ongoing self-discovery. The individual can assume some form of leadership in relation to her/his groups, associated to these ideas, and this can become an additional cause for the relative ‘security’, because he/she will potentially be perceived by others in her/his groups as important because of being knowledgeable or intelligent, or because of his/her communication capacities or because of her/his courage to speak in ways that are challenging to the consensus.

These sets of ideas, however, need to change, because of the nature of evolution, and because Mercury in the 1st House reflects a cycle of intellectual discovery that is new, and whose direction and purpose is yet unformed.

With Mercury being conjunct its South Node, the individual will be necessarily be gravitating to intellectual orientations that already existed in her/his evolutionary past. It would be possible that the individual has embraced in her/his past sets of ideas that challenged the consensus, and that a need exists in the current life to recreate or relive experiences associated with these same types of ideas and communication patterns. The individual may need to linearly understand, through these experiences, the nature of aggression or violence that defines these ideas, or that has occurred in the past as a consequence or a reflection of these ideas, and how these ideas have created conditions of insecurity for the individual or for other people. The individual may need to linearly understand the relation that exists between her/his own emotional anger and rage and the nature of the ideas to which she/he has gravitated, and further, the connection between these emotional states and the potential consequences thereof.

Given that Mercury is the ruler its North Node, which is in Gemini in the 12th House, and is in turn conjunct its own South Node in the 1st House, it is possible at the current evolutionary stage that the experienced consequences of the past intellectual orientation have been denied to some degree, this denial being an specific reason for the need to relive the experiential approach to similar sets of ideas. In some cases, though, even within the 2nd stage individuated, these same symbols can reflect that through the consequences experienced in the past the individual has already gained a fundamental understanding or insights that will manifest in the current lifetime as a new form of intellectual leadership in which the individual will consider the bigger context in which the thought forms are being delivered, the absolute relativity of whatever thought system, and further, the need to take into account the potential danger involved in challenging the consensus. A combination of both conditions can also exist. Which is which, will depend on other symbols in the birthchart. The second condition, however, would be more likely to manifest in an individual transitioning between 2nd and 3rd stage individuated. The first condition would be most likely for an individual being well within the 2nd sub-stage. The potential denial would also manifest as an increased over-investment in the existing thought forms. If the individual were at the very beginning of the 2nd sub-stage, these symbols could reflect other conditions, related with duplicity and concealment because of insecurity, and, in some cases, consequences created through lapsus or errors revealing the concealed or hidden thoughts.

The polarity point of Mercury in the 7th House Capricorn reflects the need to be able to listen (7th House) to other people in order to linearly understand the communication forms and the thought patterns of others, and the reality of these other people as it exists for them. Implies understanding how the reality of other people is consistent with the thinking processes of those people, and their own ideas, which cannot be understood solely from the own point of view. It implies assuming responsibility within communication, and for what is communicated, ie. understanding how the reality that is created is consistent with the types of thoughts that are held within or that are delivered to other people. Further, it implies considering these facts in the individual’s relation with the consensus of society, and to progressively create an inner intellectual security allowing to deliver the thought forms in ways that can be of benefit to other people within the totality of society, including the consensus. This includes being able to communicate using the language structures of others, including people in the consensus, without fearing to lose the self identity or being absorbed by the consensus because of the use of whatever linguistic forms. This approach would help the individual to create communication conditions in which other people don’t feel unnecessarily threatened by her/his intellectual orientation. In turn, the approach will allow to create conditions in which the individual is able to communicate with other people in general, instead of becoming progressively or cyclically isolated or confined in its communication possibilities to an ever reduced group of people, and that would induce confusion, loss of perspective, and further alienation for these reasons.

With the Mercury North Node being in the 12th House, Gemini, the individual needs, at this evolutionary stage, to truly embrace its desire to collect an ever increasing knowledge about the nature of its reality, instead of limiting itself to the current set of ideas which are promoting its new identity associations and separation from consensus. This implies embracing the awareness that there is always more to know, and more facts than those being considered at any point in time. It implies embracing the desire to understand the larger context in which any set of ideas makes sense, and the context in which it does not make sense. In turn, embracing this archetypical intention will induce at some point the realization of the relativity of any set of ideas, and the connection with any linear thought arrangement with the nature of illusions and dreams. Understanding the connection between these types of ideas, and dreams, and illusions, will allow the individual to understand how any possible selection of facts, or aspects within phenomenal reality, has been conditioned not only by a desire to understand or know, but also by a desire not to understand, or know, which are relative to the overall desires of whatever observer (the separation desires reflected in the 1st House Mercury). Understanding this would allow to reduce the over-investment of the individual in the current knowledge forms, and would promote a perspective in which the individual is able to analyze the nature of its fears, anger, and rage, which will not need to permeate the thought or knowledge forms the individual uses to communicate with others and to linearly understand its reality. Thus, would allow for further linear understanding of the emotional nature of the individual. The awareness that there is always more to know will promote the necessary expansion of the mental horizon of the individual, allowing to bridge or evolve between the past intellectual orientation based on consensus, and transcultural or universal frames of reference at the 3rd stage individuated state, without needing to become so enmeshed with radical ideologies and confrontations based on these ideologies.

In some cases, the Mercury North Node in the 12th House Gemini, could correlate with the emerging awareness of memories of prior lifetimes, which could occur through dreams, for example, or by some other intentional or non-intentional means.

The archetypical inconjunct between Capricorn 7th House and Gemini in the 12th House-Mercury polarity point and the North Node of Mercury- reflects that the failure to embrace the intentions for the individual of learning how to listen to the thoughts of others, and becoming responsible for the impact of its thought and communication orientation on others people and society at large, including the consensus of society,  could lead to crises in which she/he could experience alienation, isolation, or seclusion, ie. crises in which the individual would in turn face the full impact of the thoughts and ideologies of these other people, and would be thus ‘integrated’ within social structures or parameters. The relative intensity of these experiences could range between moderate isolation, to extreme conditions of isolation and powerlessness induced through violent means.

Example 2. Let’s say Mercury is conjunct its own North Node, both Mercury and its North Node in the 2nd House, in Virgo,  and the South Node of Mercury in the 3rd House, in Libra. Let’s suppose the individual is within the 1st stage spiritual condition.

Mercury in the 2nd House, in Virgo, would correlate to and individual who has needed to develop a deep discrimination about the nature of its own self-worth, and value, and value associations, and that, in order for this to occur, has needed to think in independent and autonomous ways, withdrawing from external influences. Thus, the individual has needed to deeply internalize its analytical thought focus, and stabilize the thought process. One purpose of this necessary internalization of consciousness which is occurring through the thought focus, and the self-analysis, is to allow a discrimination between what is real, and what is not real within her/himself, and what are the pre-existing inner resources that truly exist within the Soul that can be the basis for the sustainment of the individual’s life. With Mercury being in the 2nd House, the individual would be born in the current lifetime with pre-existing thought patterns, which have been determined by pre-existing associations of value and meaning. That which is given value by the individual is determined by the resources the individual has in order to face the challenge of survival, and its competency to survive. These resources determine how the individual values himself, and are the basis for her/his relationship to her/himself. They also condition how the individual gives value and meaning to any other aspect of reality. Thus, these pre-existing value associations determine those aspects of phenomenal reality that the individual selects though perception in order to include them as relevant information in the thought process.  With Mercury in the 2nd House, the thought focus of the individual needs to withdraw from the current of external experience, in order to discover from within which are the pre-existing value associations which, because of the need to survive, have determined its intellectual organization, and in more general terms, how its subjectivity has been constructed at a perceptual and sensation level. This Mercury position correlates with a need for a thought orientation that is naturally introverted (Note: as a general rule introversion/extroversion cannot be deduced only by the position of Mercury in the birthchart). Though, given the Mercury inherent nature indicated by its association with Gemini, the temptation can exist to project the thought focus to the external environment in search of new stimuli for the thought process. Mercury in the 2nd House implies the need to create a sustained focus of the thought process on the cumulated pre-existing experience, instead of needing to keep feeding the thought process with new external data. The 2nd House, and Taurus, correlate to listening to oneself. Thus, Mercury in the 2nd House reflects the need to listen to the own thoughts, to direct though inwardly, for these intentions to occur. (added later) Because of this necessary internalization and stabilization of the thought process, Mercury in the 2nd House can be very stubborn and 'fixed' in its thought process, and can also be very slow in following the course of any reasoning ...

Within the 1st stage spiritual condition, and with Mercury in the 2nd House being in Virgo, the individual would be creating on a constant basis very analytical and self-critical thoughts, which will have the effect of creating self-doubt, and doubt about the individual’s own value or worth, and its inner resources. With Mercury being in the 2nd House, thought patterns have existed which had kept the individual limited within pre-existing value associations, including thoughts of not being capable, or prepared, to do whatever the individual needs to do. In turn, this rational self-doubt has conditioned the ways in which the individual has selected and linearly ordered its perceived overall reality. Hence, the individual has been focusing, within all existing possibilities for arranging its perceived inner and outer reality, in those aspects in which she/he is not good enough, or that which needs further improvement, and in all that confirms its own sensation of not being prepared to do whatever she/he needs to do. The inner vibration generated through this thought orientation has manifested as critical thoughts towards other people, and in turn has attracted criticism from other people.

The South Node of Mercury in the 3rd House, in Libra, relative to Mercury being in the 2nd House Virgo, reflect that along a series of lifetimes the individual has tried to find externally, and through other people, alternative ways of thinking about its inner reality, and reality in general. This search has been motivated by a desire to avoid or evade the feelings of lack of worth, originating in or reflected in the Mercury in the 2nd House Virgo. This desire for alternative thought arrangements has potentially created a conflict of perspectives, which could translates in a thought process that continually jumps from one point of view to another, thus creating an additional difficulty in establishing what the individual really thinks about her/himself, or any other thing. This past orientation of the Mercury function will continue to manifest in the current lifetime, the desire to pursue, in communication with other people, a way out from the feelings of futility originating in the self-critical thoughts. However, this search for alternative ways of thought, and external validation or confirmation from other people, has been for different reasons, in the past and present, a source of additional feelings of inadequacy, imperfection, and guilt/atonement (South Node of Mercury in the 3rd House Libra, natal Mercury in the 2nd House Virgo). Potentially, these symbols reflect that an specific reason for these feelings is based in prior or current life indiscretions. The past conditioned orientation to communication and external search for information, validation, etc., will maintain the purpose of Mercury in the 2nd House, unresolved, because the internalization and stabilization of thought, are necessary. Given that Mercury is conjunct its own North Node in the 2nd House, Virgo, in order to advance in evolutionary terms, the individual needs to keep its mind focused inwardly, and to resist the temptation of evading its self-doubt through compulsive communication patterns with other people, or through the pursue of alternative thought arrangements that would order its reality in new or different ways. The Mercury conjunction to its North Node in the 2nd House indicates that the individual has been trying, along some recent prior lifetimes, to find through analytical thought, deeper ways to understand its own reality. In order to do so, the individual has needed to ‘improve’ the type of analysis she/he has been doing about himself, deeply internalizing the thought focus, with the intention to understand how his own subjectivity has been put together, and how her/his desire nature and relationship to her/himself have been the basis for its thought orientation. Thus, the individual will have the potential to linearly understand how the nature of her/his desires has conditioned his subjective arrangements of her/his perceived reality. The individual will be able to discover how her/his desires to be analytical, and self-critical, which are relative to the current EA stage, and the overall EA signature of the birthchart, have conditioned which parts of the totality of phenomenal reality she/he has been considering in the analyses, and what parts have been discarded or underrated for the same reason, despite their potential value. At same time, the internalization of the thought process would potentially allow for the individual to stabilize the thought process, and contain or moderate the self-criticism to some degree, or for some moments. At this EA stage, an additional intention of this necessary stabilization of thought, would be allowing to access deeper dimensions of consciousness.

The polarity point of Mercury in the 8th House, Pisces, will demand an orientation of the individual to linearly understand the nature of her/his motivations, in order to linearly understand the deeper reasons why she/has needed or desired to arrange his thoughts in the existing ways, and why she/he has needed or desired to become analytical and self-critical. This lesson may require confrontations with other people, who represent other ways of thinking or a deeper knowledge. Through a necessary and progressive understanding of her/his motivations, the individual will be able to linearly understand the need to accept what is imperfect in her/him, in other people, and in life in general, which will in turn allow to assess her/his own value in a new way, and create an orientation to share her/his own resources with others.

The natural inconjunct between the South Node of Mercury and the Mercury polarity point, 3rd House Libra to 8th House Pisces, could continue to manifest as experiences of disillusionment, or betrayal and violations of trust, which would be created through the pre-existing compulsion of the individual to communicate about its inner reality in search of validation, etc., with people whose own reality has not been correctly determined by the individual. Also, it could as disillusionment about the ‘new’ types of information or knowledge the individual may continue to find, instead of deepening its search of information or understanding from within.

You should definitely discuss the gender-less or neutral gender aspect to Mercury. I think that's fascinating.

Isn't Mercury the only planet that is gender-less? I think it really fits with the consciousness structure of Gemini and Virgo, ruled by Mercury.

As a Mercury's child myself (Gemini Rising & Virgo Sun), I see gender and sexuality as so fluid, so flexible. It saddens me that gender roles have become so crystallized and hardened.

Mercury teaches us to be flexible, in every aspect, malleable, to love diversity and variety. Flexibility is a major aspect of Mercury & Mercurians.

Best wishes!

Hi Gonzalo,

Really loved how you have presented this natural trinity of Mercury and it's Nodes. The analysis you have provided of the examples you have used demonstrate the depth of what EA is, and can be. Within that depth is link between the past, present, and the evolving future, and the link between this natural trinity that serves as the evolutionary progression or flow.

Simply brilliant EA work Gonzalo. And thank you for taking time to do this on behalf of our EA community here.

Hi Simon

… I think the EA sexual correlation for Mercury, because of its natural connection with Gemini, points to bi-sexuality, rather than ‘gender-less ness’ … it would seem to me that ‘gender-less ness’ is not a form existing within human nature … not really sure, but my impression is that gender is a natural function ...

... different from bisexuality (Gemini), and different from androgyny (Libra)… if not natural, it would seem to me that ‘gender-less ness’ would be rather an Aquarius archetype, ie. a kind of sophisticated man-made  concept reflecting a rebellion to gender possibilities existing in human form  … well, just my thoughts about this …

The flexibility of Mercury relates to the mutability and adaptability inherent to the mutable cross within the Zodiac …

Hi Rad, Jason, anyone else interested i this thread ...

Now posting two more examples re Mercury and its nodes.

Thanks for observations or comments.

God Bless,

Gonzalo

Example 3. Mercury is in the 3rd House, in Leo; south node of Mercury in the 4th House Leo, north node of Mercury in the 4th House Virgo. Individual is in the 1st stage individuated.

With Mercury being in the 3rd House, the individual has desired to open its intellectual orientation in a variety of directions, and create a diversification of the existing thought possibilities. These desires will be creating a natural curiosity translating in a need to explore different ways of thought, and to collect information of different types from many different sources. It will create a restless intellectual orientation to overall reality, in which the individual will need to ponder whatever aspect of reality from different points of view, in order to expand the intellectual horizon beyond the existing understandings. With Mercury being in Leo in the 3rd House, the individual would be looking for information or knowledge forms that would promote her/his ongoing self-actualization. Thus, the individual would be drawn to discover and select from her/his environment information or knowledge forms that would be pointing, at least potentially, to a variety of directions which would allow the individual to understand its sense of unique purpose, and that would provide different perspectives about how to actualize that sense of purpose.

Being at the 1st stage Individuated state, the individual desires to discover who she/he is from new points of view that are independent from the consensus ways of understanding her/himself. However, at same time, the individual desires to maintain its previous identity associations, which were based on that same consensus, because of insecurity in face of the unknown-the emerging identity associations. At this stage, the new thought directions reflected in Mercury in the 3rd House would correlate with types of information that the Soul is drawn to in order to expand the pre-existing ways of understanding reality, and her/himself. Thus, new points of view exploring different aspects of the individual’s reality, revealing that there is more to know beyond the intellectual organization defining the consensus consciousness. The individual would need to be encouraged to embrace this search of new ways of thought, because the new knowledge can help promote the individual’s evolution beyond the consensus. With the south node of Mercury being in the 4th House, the past intellectual orientation of the individual has been conditioned by a need to conform to what is known or familiar, ie. the individual has desired to think according to parameters which are considered to be valid for her/his culture, society, or family. While this would hold true for any Soul in the consensus, the south node of Mercury in the 4th House Leo, relative to Mercury in the 3rd House Leo, can reflect a Soul that, within consensus, has desired to “think” and to create intellectual elaborations or constructions reflecting or ‘expanding’ the consensus ways of thought. While every Soul within 3rd stage consensus can “think” within certain parameters, and have a complete “knowledge” about how their society works, not every Soul within the 3rd stage consensus is inwardly defined or oriented to intellectualize the consensus knowledge forms. In turn, there are some Souls within consensus that do elaborate the consensus intellectual constructions and knowledge, or which create intellectual constructions within the consensus thought forms. Further, some Souls within consensus do create intellectual variations within the consensus themes, or innovations, some of them even appearing, from a consensus point of view, as new ways of thought. Still further, other individuals in the consensus serve the consensus to know what they think, or disseminate the existing consensus thought forms, either through the media, education, etc. Any of these themes could have been played out by an individual with the south node of Mercury in the 4th House Leo, and Mercury in the 3rd House Leo. Whatever the specific manifestation of the Mercury function in the recent past lifetimes, the individual did develop a feeling of importance or special purpose that was linked with his thought or mental abilities. In turn, these mental abilities were an indirect source of emotional security, which created the need or desire to conform to ‘traditional’ ways of thought, or the ways of thought that existed in the families where the individual was born. With Mercury in the 3rd House, being the planetary ruler of the north node of Mercury in the 4rh House, in Virgo, it can be seen that when deviation occurred from these accepted thought orientations, the individual was made to feel wrong, which was a source of emotional insecurity for the individual, which, because of the prevalent desire within consensus- to belong, and to be on top of the consensus at the 3rd stage-lead the individual not only to conform, but to expand same types of mental orientations and to become valued for the individuals mental abilities from the consensus point of view. Thus, the mental orientation has already served to create on an ongoing basis a duplicity within the Soul, which at the 3rd stage consensus manifested as an intellectual orientation in which the individual progressively felt that did not reflect who he/she was, ie. thought forms that the individual would desire to apply to others but that would feel did not fit in the own reality, this progressive awareness leading to the 1st stage Individuated state (Note: we’re talking only about Mercury here, while the evolutionary transition, and desires leading to the transition, would imply many other dynamics and functions within consciousness; thus, the above is only relative and applies to the desires associated with thought function on the Soul, as a part of the picture).

At the current EA stage- 1st stage Individuated- these prior developments can translate in an individual in which the duplicity will only continue to manifest because of the security associations with consensus in which the individual’s past intellectual orientation will be still much valued for consensus, thus continuing to be a source of security and self-consistency for the individual. Thus, the individual can create or maintain a duplicity in which she/he thinks once for her/himself, which she/he keeps for her/himself, and then thinks for consensus, in order to adequate the thoughts that are communicated to the consensus expectations of the people around her/him. It can also continue to manifest as the individual pursues paths of intellectual self-actualization-new studies, new books, new investigations- which continue to serve the consensus purposes of her/his society, while inwardly feeling different from those types of ideas. With the north node of Mercury in the 4th House being in Virgo, and the polarity point of Mercury in the 9th House, Aquarius, the potential exists for the individual to create necessary crises, based on the existing duplicity, in which the inner thought orientation will be exposed, revealing that the thought forms being delivered at social level are not consistent with the types of thoughts the individual really has. Given that the individual is concealing the emerging types of thoughts, she/he will necessarily experience intellectual stagnation because of the impossibility to process through communication the nature of the existing thoughts, this stagnation and lack of necessary processing creating inner conflicts of perspective, and confusion. Thus, the crises, and potential traumas, can occur through communications with other people such as “friends”, family members, etc., which can manifest some type of similar duplicity. It can occur through the nature of the thoughts that are communicated by the individual, in which she/he could inadvertently introduce ideas which are out of context of out of the accepted consensus ways of thought.

With the polarity point of Mercury being in the 9th House, Aquarius, the individual needs to develop intellectual honesty and objectivity, and thus pursue ways of intellectual self-actualization that reflect the process of discovery that is in course. Thus, the individual could need in first place to have the courage to accept the existing duality of perspectives she/he may have about whatever subject, in order to embrace the search for information and communication serving to provide perspective on the existing evolutionary process, and the directions that will promote evolution. This polarity point also reflects the need to pursue the necessary intellectual explorations in ways which are independent of the consensus acclaim or validation-to create an intellectual self-honesty allowing to liberate from the need of such acclaim. With the north node of Mercury being in the 4th House, Virgo, the individual needs to create a linear and analytic understanding of the emotional reasons why she/he would create or maintain the duplicity. This would lead to an emotional process in which the individual progressively builds an accurate understanding of how she/he has been conditioned in his pre-existing ways of thought, through family expectations and pedagogy, to think or communicate in certain ways, and how this conditioned thought organizations did not reflect her/his emotional needs as a child, which, in turn, created thought and communication orientations that did not allow for the necessary processing of emotional life, and further, how this family and social conditioning has translated in the adult ways of thought and communication, etc., which still prevent  her/him from being able to communicate what she/he emotionally experiences. By these means, she/he would be gaining an increasing basis for emotional self-knowledge, which will serve the individual to create emotional security, and to openly embrace the emerging thought associations despite consensus validation. This will potentially allow the individual to learn to share her/his understandings or to teach other people in society which are in a similar process as she/he is.

Example 4. Mercury in the 4th House Pisces, south node of Mercury in the 3rd House Aquarius, north node of Mercury in the 4th House Pisces, Balsamic conjunct Mercury. Individual in early 3rd stage Individuated state.

Mercury in the 4th House reflects that a new cycle of intellectual organization of phenomenal reality is underway. The intention of this new cycle is to create a progressive linear understanding of the emotional reality of the individual, in which the individual needs to give names and classifications to the experienced emotions, in order to create a rational basis for a progressive self-knowledge of emotional nature. This implies an ongoing integration of the rational function with the nature of emotional life. Because of the cardinal nature of the 4th House archetype, reflecting a new cycle of evolutionary development, the individual does not know how to give names and classifications to the existing emotional experiences. The individual may not know whether she/he is experiencing an emotion, or a thought, or both. The thought function will require to be overwhelmed by the phenomenal reality of emotional nature which the individual desires to understand. This can translate in an experienced conflict between thought and emotion, which will progressively serve the purpose of understanding on a rational basis the nature of the emotional life.

The fundamental reason for the potential conflict between thought and emotion is based on the linear nature of Mercury thought, versus the non-linear nature of emotional reality. Thus, while the individual’s thought focus attempts to create a linear order within the emotional reality, the thought function will be cyclically overwhelmed by the intensity of emotions, in such a way that the point of view of the individual will be shifting in irregular cycles depending on the constant motion of the emotional states. Thus, the thought function will be naturally conditioned by the emotional life of the individual, and so will be the communication and language functions.

In some cases, Mercury in the 4th House or Cancer will reflect a defense against emotions operating through rationalization, which will intensify the potential conflict between thought and emotion, dictating the emotional need of being very sure about the own thoughts, which in turn would be operating as a means to prevent direct contact with the emotional reality.

Mercury in the 4th House requires to see phenomenal reality from the own point of view, ie. things need to be very personal, and the individual needs to speak in its own name, ie. first person singular (or first person plural only when it comes to personal or family matters or relationships, ie. excluding group allocutions based on abstract identity associations).

With the Mercury south node in the 3rd House Aquarius, relative to the third stage Individuated state, the individual has embraced in its recent past lifetimes a variety of thought forms which have been defined by desires to rebel and liberate against consensus, and which have intended to create social change. The individual has been thinking in collective terms, and has created a series of illusions about the existing possibilities to promote social change through group associations with like-minded individuals who shared same types of revolutionary ideas and illusions (Mercury 4th House Pisces, south node of Mercury in the 3rd House Aquarius).

Potentially, intense or traumatic experiences of disillusionment and powerlessness have been created in the past, associated with these types of ideas, illusions, and groups. The individual has spoken in its past on behalf of others, or a part of these groups defined by ideals, and which potentially have been idealized to some degree, or in which the individual’s self concept has been idealized to some degree through the vehicle of this collective intentions. To some degree, the individual has avoided the ongoing lessons of emotional self-knowledge by embracing these collective ideologies, because she/he has been overly identified at intellectual and emotional levels with collective thoughts and emotional states. Within the experiences of disillusionment about the possibilities for social reform or revolution based on these types of ideas, and groups, it is possible that the individual has also been disillusioned because of duplicity of the groups associations, and because of all the personal losses of peers belonging to these groups. I some cases, the polarity point of Mercury in the 10th House Virgo, ruled by Mercury in the 4th House Pisces, will correlate with a pattern of guilt. Thus, many unresolved emotions exist within the Soul, which in some cases will create or induce some degree of denial of the inner emotional states, in which the individual may attempt to recover the past illusions of what is possible to accomplish through these ideas, and groups.
With Mercury in the 4th House Pisces, the individual needs to linearly understand the nature of its inner emotional reality, and further, the nature of any illusions she/he has been creating for her/himself or others. For this to occur, the individual needs to deeply withdraw from external and social environment, in order to deal with the nature of the inner life. The thought and communication function need to reflect what the individual is experiencing on a moment to moment basis, as a means for a progressive integration of the personal emotional life within the egocentric identity and self-concept. Within this intention, the need to see overall reality from the own point of view implies the need to know what she/he feels about anything on an ongoing basis. For this to occur, the individual will be necessarily attracting other people who will challenge the individual’s point of view, and the individual’s point of view about her/himself or her/his own reality. Potentially, this people and their thoughts will create insecurity for the Soul, at an emotional and intellectual levels, where the intention will be to create a deeper connection of the individual with its inner life, leading to a progressive self-security about what the individual is inwardly experiencing, and of who and what the individual is, and is not.

The individual needs to resist the temptation to engage in intellectual or abstract discussions, or to search for information of abstract nature. The individual may need to be very private within her/himself and allow her/himself to constantly monitor the forever changing states of her/his emotions. Within this orientation, the individual needs to allow the thought focus to surrender to the inner emotional states, to let go and to dissolve the thought function within the emotional states, which will allow the thought function to relate to the shifting nature of the emotional reality. Along this process, the individual may experience or re-experience confusion about who she/he is, and confusion about the existing thoughts within her/his consciousness. Given the past intellectual orientation, the individual needs to learn how to discriminate (Mercury) between inner states and information existing within her/his individuated subconscious, and the inner states existing in time present of emotional/spiritual nature.

As a consequence of the deepening thought experience, the individual may be recovering past life memories of potentially traumatic nature. In midst of the confusion states, and the radical reappraisal that has been in course concerning the possibilities of social change, the individual may feel personally disillusioned, and victimized. However, the ongoing purpose is taking the Soul to a deeper understanding of her/himself, and overall reality, through emotional self-discovery and integration. This ongoing self-discovery of emotional nature will progressively lead the Soul into the spiritual state.

With the polarity point of Mercury being in the 10th House Virgo, the individual needs to intellectually orientate to contributing to social betterment within the existing structures, in a new way, reflecting her/his ongoing emotional/spiritual awareness. For this to occur, the individual-who at this evolutionary stage has already understood the nature of the social conditioning that prevents or delays the possibilities for social change-needs to create a determined orientation to contribute with her/his vast and progressively deep understanding of social processes to her/his society, instead of drowning in her/his inner disillusionment and futility. Such orientation will create a counterpoint for the inner thought process, and will provide a concentrated focus on external reality allowing to process and analyze the inner experience, and which will, in turn, allow the individual to go deeper within her/himself.

Failure to understand or to cooperate with these intentions, will create deep confusion, potential depressive thoughts with feelings of powerlessness, or, if the individual attempts to recover the past intellectual orientations, experiences of crises, or trauma, in which the individual may re-create social alienation for her/himself or others.

Hi Rad

Thanks so much for your feedback, and it's all I needed to know by now. I think I am already getting a clearer idea of how the book should be: using many examples, and different types of examples, and will work on this direction.

God Bless,
