Hi All,

We found an old transcript of a lecture that JWG gave in Holland in 1989 on Pluto. We thought we would post it for all those to read who wish to do so.

God Bless, Rad

PLUTO, THE EVOLUTIONARY NATURE OF THE SOUL

The first question 1 would like to ponder is the following: What is a Soul? All of us have heard this term, it has been in our culture for thousands of years, but where or what is it? The working definition I use, that perhaps you can share, is that the soul is an immutable consciousness, meaning - it cannot be destroyed. The Soul is not analogous to an arm - you cannot open the brain and find it.  It is pure energy. It is non-material. And it is immutable.

The soul itself has an ego. Just as a personality has an ego. Now this is not commonly thought about in metaphysical material. This simply means that each Soul has its own unique identity that cannot be destroyed. It is not the same as the ego of personality. For example for those who have studied the Seth-material: Seth is a disincarnate entity who speaks from the point of view of Seth. Seth implies an image, a name, an identity, i.e. ego. Now the ego itself and all of us of course are overly familiar with ego and with this whole spiritual rap of somehow you are supposed to get rid of the ego from the spiritual point of view. The bottom line is that you cannot get rid of the ego. It is simply not possible. In fact if you did not have an ego, you wouldn't have a sense of identity. But the question is: What is an ego? The only way it can really be described is through analogy, i.e. take the example of a movie-projector: imagine that you have a reel of film on this thing and you have a screen in front of it, but unless you have a lens, you are not going to have an image on the screen. You are going to have a bunch of diffused images, that are blurred. So in fact the lens generates a focusing device, that allows for the images to have distinct form and separate contour. Similarly ego-consciousness generates a distinct identity. So you can have a self-image. Even the greatest masters of all time, for example Jesus and so on: if they did not have an ego, they could not even utter their own name. It would not be possible. The real issue is how the ego is identified with the source of its creation in the readjustment or redefinition that this infers.

So the Soul has its own Ego, just as a creative personality also has an ego. The Soul is an
immutable consciousness. It cannot be destroyed and it does evolve. If we ponder the nature of evolution, it is actually beyond debate. All that we have to do is to examine the nature of Nature and we find that in fact things evolve through time and space. Is it not true that all of us sitting in this room have a continuous sense of becoming? We are always in a state of becoming. This implies evolution.  It is an actual experience. So we can ask the question, that if there is in fact this evolutionary principle; what is the inner dynamic within the Soul, that correlates to its own evolution? What makes it so?

And the very simple answer and the very simple truth is that within each Soul there is a dual desire archetype. One desire is to separate away from that which has created the Soul in the first place. This we could call God or the Source And the other desire is to return to that very same Source. The evolution of the Soul is simply based on the progressive elimination of all separating desires. This simple truth is the basis of what psychologists call Free Will or free choice, i.e. that what you desire will translate into an action, or an experience by necessity. And this very simple truth is the basis of Buddha's enlightenment for example, underneath the famous bodhi tree as he pondered the nature of sorrow, pain, and misery. This realization is what promoted his enlightenment. Now from another point of view, we can all in this room today prove this truth. It is beyond astrology at this level. Is it not true that all of us sitting in this room can have any manner of separating desire, i.e. the new thing, the new possession, the new experience, the new ambition, the new lover, whatever.  And we might have the capacity to actualize and obtain that which we desire. And when we do in fact may have a sense of satisfaction when we get what we want.  But what soon replaces that sense of satisfaction? Is it not dissatisfaction? Is it not the sense of something more?

It is this sense of something more and/or dissatisfaction that echoes and/or mirrors the desire to return to that which creates you. Every human being has this experience. It is universal in nature. It transcends a specific culture. So the evolution of the soul is simply based on the progressive elimination of all separating desires. It is that simple. In each life the soul generates and/or creates its own personality. Each personality in each life is orientated to the phenomenal universe in such a way as to attract or create the experiences necessary in order to effect its evolutionary requirements. There is the famous example of ten people viewing and/or experiencing the same event and yet having ten different interpretations. Each personality is orientated to the phenomenal reality  in its own unique way generating the kind of experience /interpretation that facilitates its evolutionary requirements.  And, again, the personality has its own ego and we cannot remove it.  What is interesting in this respect  is just as the Soul creates the personality that it needs, that also correlates to the RNA/ DNA: the structure or genetic code of the body. Pluto correlates at this level to the RNA/DNA-code or genetic code of the body.  In metaphysical terms this is called genetic karma, which is not the same as family/heredity as you know it. Metaphysically speaking this simply means that when a sexual union is effected, each human being carries their evolutionary and karmic background in their sexual fluids, and when these fluids unite in the act of intercourse, these karma's and backgrounds combine in such a way as to attract a soul that reflects and/or mirrors the reality of each parent,  and yet combines in such a way as to reflect its own, thus generating the genetic code of its body.  It is determined by the evolutionary requirements of the Soul.

This is one of the deepest arguments 1 would have for not being sexually promiscuous; the point being that whoever we sleep with, we are going to exchange karma with and therefore our own path in some way is altered. Is it not true that whoever we sleep with, that that person is more deeply embedded in us than those that we do not? Is this not a simple truth? It is a reflection of this karma. When you deal with the nature of evolution, there are two types: there is Darwin's notion of uniformity, which by the way occurred when there was a series of super conjunctions in Pisces. This implies non-cataclysmic change, slow, yet progressive change. And of course there is cataclysmic evolution, as in volcanoes, earthquakes, the unexpected loss of a loved one, etc.   These are cataclysmic events. We have these two kinds of evolutionary events, which again can be empirically proved by observing life itself. It is beyond debate. So the question becomes: what determines the difference, i.e. what determines if we have cataclysmic events that enforce evolutionary acceleration or non-cataclysmic events? What is the causal factor? Typically and generally the determinant is resistance to necessary growth and/or change.

Now why would one resist? What is the basis of resistance? It is based on security, emotional security. What is the basis of emotional security? It is called self-consistency. In order to feel secure, generally speaking, we must feel self-consistent. The basis of self-consistency is familiarity with that which has come before. So that any time familiarity and/or that which brings us to any moment in time is challenged by that which is an unknown quantity, human nature tends to resist that new and/or confronting force, generating resistance. Now, if this resistance carries on to the point  that the evolutionary requirements are in fact utterly blocked, then the Soul will set itself up for a cataclysmic event.  The nature of a cataclysmic event would thus accelerate and promote the evolutionary requirements of the Soul. The other form and/or cause of cataclysmic events is karma. And let us keep in mind here: there's all kinds of karma. Not just negative karma. For example you can have a karma of illusion. You could have lived a series of lives in which you thought what you are creating is reality,  and what you thought of as reality was in fact an illusion. So, karmically,  speaking you come up to a point in time in which you have to experience disillusionment to counteract illusion. Now this can be for some, i.e. Pisces Moons, a cataclysmic event.

Generally speaking, we can have karmic dynamics generating cataclysmic events. So, the other way to look at this is, if a Soul decides to consciously cooperate with its evolutionary requirements, then generally speaking, it will not have cataclysmic events, unless there is a karmic determinant. If we approach this non-metaphysically, i.e. not every client coming in your door is going to be asking the questions: "Why am I here?" and "What are my lessons?", and in fact,  most clients couldn't care less. We have to be able to talk about this in their language, and what this means is that Pluto, non-metaphysically speaking, correlates to the sources, the causes,  of the deepest levels of unconscious security in an individual. Again you have the implication of that which has come before bringing the person to this moment in time, and , again,  you have self-consistency equaling resistance. Non-metaphysically speaking you now have the origins of compulsion, obsession, and  defending at all costs that which you consider your existing reality, thus creating the same effect: resisting necessary growth.

The bottom line is that in either scenario, i.e. non-metaphysically and metaphysically, when you look into the birth chart, the actual house and sign position of Pluto will describe graphically and in detail, that which has come before. Thus constituting unconsciously what the Soul is used to, familiar with, and thus unconsciously gravitates to that particular orientation to reality in order to feel secure. Now if the person stays just within that orientation you have the Plutonian phenomena of stagnation, and non-growth. If, in other words, you just stay within a point of view life after life and never change it, how in the world are you going to grow? Let's remember that all of us are living in the universe of duality and/or polarity: cause/effect, time/space. Now when we overlay this within a birth chart, we simply find that in each life, the growth-point, the evolutionary intent for the life,  is determined in the opposite house and sign of Pluto itself: the law of polarity. So for the non-metaphysically inclined, you can simply recommend strategies that are implied in Pluto's opposite house and sign, that will then allow that person to grow. For the metaphysically inclined, you can speak in this type of language.

Now this also applies to the generation. There are going to be millions of people with Pluto in Leo, Pluto in Cancer, Pluto in Virgo and so on. Now what does this mean? Why would millions of people have Pluto in the same sign? Simply speaking, it means, in order to effect  the evolutionary requirements of the planet, it takes more than one person, to do so. For example, at this point in time many people here will have Pluto in Leo. The polarity-point for that generation is Aquarius. Now is it a co-incidence, or synchronistic that as we move to the Aquarian Age that more and more people with Pluto in Leo will come into positions of social power. If we dip into history, for example, most of you will remember a character by the name of Jesus, and you can dicker with the birth time and the month and all this, but the bottom line is that in any possible chart you can come up with, he will have had Pluto in Virgo. Now in his own words, he said that he was here to usher in a New Age, called the Pisces Age. The polarity point of Virgo obviously is Pisces. Now again, is this co-incidence or synchronicity? So it takes a whole bunch of people to effect  the planetary evolutionary requirements, and thus you have this generational effect But let's face it: Pluto is also in your chart, as an individual. And you have these individual implications. Yes, you are part of your generation, but you are also a distinct person within that generation. So you have this basic simple truth, that the evolutionary requirements individually speaking,  are reflected in Pluto's opposite house and sign. One thing we should say before we go on , is that, again,  through empirical observation beyond astrology - simply observe the totality of your culture here in Holland, or in any other country that you happen to inhabit - you will find through such observation  that roughly 70 of the collective mass is in a "consensus-state", i.e. people who take their reality clues, values, beliefs, points of view, interpretation-patterns, morality-patterns, judgment-patterns, right and wrong patterns, take their clues from the consensus. Roughly 20 is in Jungian terms, in what we could call the "individuated state", i.e. Souls that have evolved out of the consensus.

An example: if you find yourself in the "consensus-state", and the astronomer tells you astrology is bogus, this becomes automatically your opinion, without further questioning. Why? Because scientists have told you so. But if you find yourself in the "individuated state", you will question for yourself the scientific assumption. Classic psychological symptoms of the individuated person in varying degrees of intensity are a sense of cultural alienation, and a fundamental feeling of being different from the mass. Roughly four to five percent  of the collective mass is in what we could call a "spiritual state", which is different than religion. Religion is for the "consensus". Why? It infers sectarian, dogmatic points of view: "I'm right and you are wrong", whereas spirituality embraces the universal, and does not put down any other valid or relevant metaphysical or spiritual discipline. People who are in a "spiritual state", their values, their beliefs and so forth, will embrace this universal point of view. Roughly four to five percent  of the collective mass are  Souls that are evolving into human consciousness come from other kingdoms, i.e. animal life.

Now we can make these observations and the reason I am pointing this out is that when you look into the birth chart, i.e. a piece of paper with a circle on it, you cannot determine the evolutionary condition of the Soul. You have to do the traditional astrology thing, which is to observe and correlate. This is most important to do, i.e. if you find a 9th house Pluto in front of you, what you have to say is that this person is dependent on the evolutionary condition of that person. Every 9th house Pluto chart you do is not going to automatically equal a metaphysical master. If they are in a "consensus state", you could meet master car sales persons, or a person who is perhaps going through the motions of going to church. And thus your orientation and approach to this person must be different We have to make these observations  and keep in mind that, relative to evolution, a soul evolves through these states. It is possible, for example, to run into a person who is straddling right in the middle of the consensus and the individuated, manifesting psychological behavioral symptoms of each, going back and forth. You see, for those who have evolved to the outer limit of the consensus, these become your political leaders. Why? Because they know how the system works: they have been in it a long time. And then you have the cliché: " the blind leading the blind".

The next point of our astrology we want to consider: the North and South Node of the Moon. Why? What is the relationship? Again we are talking about a soul that creates a personality that has an Ego. The Moon, at least in the astrology that I do, correlates with the current life Ego. So, when we deal with the South Node, we are looking at the types of personalities that the soul prior to this life has created, in order to generate the necessary experiences that have allowed its evolutionary requirements to occur in past life. And again if you look at your basic astrology, you have a natural triad between Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. And again the Moon obviously rules Cancer. So the South Node in the birth chart can be seen as a prior life vehicle and/or mode of operation that the soul has utilized to actualize, to develop, its evolutionary requirements prior to this life. So if we take an example: say you have this 9th house Pluto and you have say South Node in the 7th house and let's assume that the person in question is in an "individuated state". Could we not make a simple deduction, i.e. prior to this life the soul in question has desired to understand itself in philosophical and/or metaphysical and/or cosmological terms. (Ninth house). And let's say that the prior life vehicle (South Node, 7th house) the soul used to do so, to actualize the desire, to initiate (the 7th house, cardinal) a diversity of relationships (7th house) with teacher types (9th house Pluto) in which the person effectively was gathering a bunch of information from these types, relative to his primary desire to know itself in these terms: cosmologically. Thus, coming into this life, you can find a person who is basically dependent- based on prior orientations - on that orientation. And yet, in this life, the polarity point of Pluto, will be in the third house and the current life Node in the first house.

So what are we now seeing? In order for this soul to grow, it must initiate a new cycle (North Node in the first house) in which it breaks the dependency of the old cycle (initiating relationship of the teacher-type) and it must now learn in this life to ask and answer its own questions to become the teacher, to not be dependent on the teacher. Which means it is going to have to confront Pluto, its pre-existing philosophical orientations to reality, these orientations themselves defined by external teachers. The confrontation now means that it must learn to discover its own voice, its own vision and its own philosophical orientation. Now contrast this, with the same ninth house Pluto, with the South Node in the first house and in this life North Node in the 7th house. We still have the same 9th house Pluto, but can we not see clearly, that the prior life orientation was fundamentally different, i.e.: yes, there were these desires to understand itself in cosmological terms, but for the South Node, the prior life vehicle/personalities in the first house, can we not make the simple deduction, that this person prior to this life had already learned to see itself, experienced himself as his own teacher? That it is a relationship of one, that it already has learned to ask and answer its own questions and that with the North Node in the 7th house, in this life, the polarity point in the third house - that it must in this life learn the lesson called: the diversity of truth. There is not just his point of view any more. This ninth house Pluto will simply design a life experience, in this case, in which it will confront a diversity of teachings, coming at it from a diversity of people, that have all kinds of points of view, in which it must confront the existing limitation in its own philosophical thinking. You see? It must learn to see that its own truth is relative.

It must learn to share itself as an equal (North Node in seventh house) with other people. The same ninth house Pluto, but the experiences leading to these are fundamentally different If you just take a moment to reflect on your own case, i.e. where your Pluto is, the nodal axis, the polarity point, you can see these simple truths speaking in your own chart You can, (Pluto) prove it to yourself. The next part of this method is to locate the planetary rulers of each Node, by house and sign, i.e. if you have got South Node in Libra, the planetary ruler clearly is Venus. You must locate this by house and sign. The reason is that the planetary ruler of the South Node , prior to this life, has been used as what I call, a "facilitator", that has itself allowed, or promoted, the actualization of the South Node itself. An example: Pluto in the 9th house. South Node in the 7th, the planetary ruler in the 4th. Simple deduction: this person wanted to understand itself in cosmological terms, he was dependent on a relationship, that relationship primarily was with parents. The parents' belief system gave primary clues from which this person formulated his own philosophical point of view. Similarly, the planetary ruler of the North Node, in this life, is used to facilitate the development of the North Node, which in turn is used to facilitate the development of Pluto's polarity point You have an equation of 3 + 3 equaling 6. The number 3 implies the trinity, the number 6 implies completion, a correlation to natural truth. Now you can take this simple method and apply it to any chart, and it becomes the basis of what I call the main karmic evolutionary dynamic: the bottom line, the foundation in any chart, upon which the rest of the chart is built It is analogous to the foundation when we make a house, without a foundation the house cannot stand. Once you understand the specifics of this foundation, you can then see that every other planet will contribute to the evolutionary requirements of the soul.

Let's face it: each sign is an archetype and there is a spectrum within that archetype. Venus in Virgo does not mean just one thing. There is a spectrum of possible experience. How do you know at what point in the spectrum that Venus in Virgo is orientated to? You can know it by understanding the bottom line, the main karmic evolutionary dynamic in the birth chart We also want to consider Pluto's aspects. Here we have a situation where the amount of Pluto aspects will actually correlate to the evolutionary pace of the soul, i.e. how much has it decided to work upon in this life? Anything that Pluto aspects implies limitation that must be confronted and metamorphosed  - to die and to be reborn. Take an example: somebody who has Pluto aspecting everything is going to be qualitatively different from say Pluto forming few aspects to planets. Now, if you look at it from a past life point of view you have to make the consideration of aspect-orbs, which is of course one of the great debates in astrology, which we will not answer today.

We will say very simply that, take the example of say having Pluto at 5 Leo, you could have Venus at 5 Scorpio,  and then of course you have a square. But you could also possibly^ have Venus at 25 Libra, and still have a square, or you could have Venus at 15 Leo  and still have a square. Now if we look at this evolutionarily, there must be a difference through time and space. Very simple example: we go to a department store, we buy ourselves a new pair of let's say pants and when we first put these darn things on, do they feel like they are ours? Or do they feel like they are new? And stiff? What is the difference between this and wearing the same pair of pants for 5 years? Does it not contour, does it not feel like home, familiar? Similarly, when you have a brand new aspect from Pluto as in 25 Libra the Venus of the person is just coming under this metamorphic impulse, this evolution has not had prior experience and thus the reaction to it is going to be fundamentally different than say the person who has had a series of lives prior to this one, in which they have already lived with this dynamic: now Venus at 15 Scorpio. Do you see my point? And again we have to adjust our approach and our language towards this person to accommodate.

I also want to point out a couple of special exceptions to these rules: Pluto conjunct South Node, Pluto conjunct North Node, Pluto square the nodal axis. When you find Pluto on the South Node one of three conditions can exist, karmically speaking. The first two are extreme, the last one will be common. When you have Pluto on the South Node, the person can be in a karmic condition of completely reliving prior life conditions, because they have not been dealt with successfully, prior to this life. This person will be extremely frustrated. Why? Because they sense the promise of the North Node and yet karmically speaking are blocked from actualizing it: they feel trapped. You have a possible condition in which the person is in what has been called a karmic "fruition" condition, meaning that the prior life efforts have developed the South Node to the point, that it is totally and highly developed, that it is in a state of fruition. Karmically speaking the person is coming into this life to share, to disseminate, to impart, to give the knowledge implied in the Pluto/South Node symbol and yet karmically they are still frustrated, because again they sense the promise of the North Node and karmically they are determined to share the South Node.

The most common condition is to experience both. A little bit of relive, a little bit of fruition. Generally speaking, most people get involved with their North Node and its polarity point around their first Saturn-return. In this particular karmic condition, the person generally speaking, is blocked from that North Node until the second Saturn-return. Now this can be modified relative to aspects to the North and the South Node. For an example you have Pluto conjunct South Node and Venus conjunct North Node: you can see that prior to this life the person has already been working to get himself out of the South Node experience.

When you have Pluto on the North Node, it means that that particular soul has already been working in this area of growth before this life and in this life is meant to continue working in this direction. Everything in the chart is coming through the Pluto/North Node-symbol. Everything. There is no polarity point And when you have Pluto square the nodal axis, evolutionarily it is called: skipped steps, wherein the person has been fluctuating back and forth between the North and South Node, without developing completely or thoroughly either experience as defined by the placement of the North and South Node. They have been flip-flopping and karmically speaking, coming into this life, yet again they have to recover the skipped steps, in order for the evolutionary point to be developed.

Now, there is much more to this material, but this is normally much more than an hour lecture, so perhaps we gave you some tantalizing clues and I would say this, that during this conference, if you have questions after this morning, feel free to approach me and 1 will talk with you.

(This lecture was one of two lectures given on March 4 1989, during the first Saturn/Neptune conjunction of 1989, in Scheveningen, Holland, at the occasion of the conference "Visions and Reality", organised by Astro-Kring).
