Rad, I have further questions based on Ari´s question and your answer, and would like to have my understanding checked on this.
What I understand at this point is as follows. Knowledge that the Soul has been able to assimilate or realize in prior lifetimes will be reflected in the Jupiter natal archetype. Jupiter itself correlates with the Soul desires to expand beyond what the Soul already knows, and beyond the immediacy of circumstances in order to know the truth of anything, including personal truth, the nature of the phenomena themselves, and the nature of the whole truth or ‘the Truth’ which is the basis of all the rest. The nature of truth itself is non-conceptual. However, aspects of the truth, and aspects of the phenomena themselves, even though not linearly ordered, are not merely ‘chaotic’. They manifest ‘emergent’ patterns which then serve as the basis for the creation of concepts, which can be linearly arranged serving for different types of descriptions. These concepts, arrangements and descriptions are a function of the Mercury archetype. From the point of view of how we can relate to phenomena, or to the nature of truth, perhaps the main intention of these Mercury concepts and descriptions is to direct the ‘observer’ in some direction allowing to directly experience that which is pointed at through the nature of words. Though, when such direct experience does not occur and the observer does not realize the nature of the phenomena, the left brain thought function can continue to operate within the scope of the linear connections language used in the description: a reflection of the nature of the mind. This can lead to confusion between ‘map and territory’, and between the observer and the observed. Because ‘knowledge’ provides a relative security for the Soul, the Soul can desire to think it ‘knows’ that which it does not know. Thus, we have the phenomenon of beliefs, ie. the Soul can believe whatever it wants to believe. The dynamic of believing means that whatever belief the Soul has operates within consciousness ‘as if’ it were real. That which is believed is given the value of a experienced truth. Given that beliefs filter the direct impact of reality, any Soul can have different types of desires that are a reason for any beliefs, and not other, or not just ‘not knowing’. In the dynamic of beliefs, the Soul relies on linguistic descriptions. As a simple example, someone can believe ‘God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”. A Christian can believe this, and some ‘Christians’ have killed other people to defend this ‘truth’, even having no direct experience of what such ‘dogma’ could refer to.
Souls can have many types of beliefs which are formulated in linguistic terms, and which form a system. Souls can learn any belief system from books. Even, if a Soul chooses to consistently apply some Mercury ‘instructions’ this can lead the Soul to directly realize whatever aspect of reality the instruction points at, beyond the linguistic form itself. Here there’s a direct natural connection and collaboration between the Jupiter and Mercury functions, right and left brains.
However, beliefs are not necessarily dependent on Mercury thought forms, and they can be based directly on experience. The nature of Jupiter is inherently experiential. As an example, let’s say a Soul experiences abandonment, rejection and abuse during early childhood, which have the effect of inducing intense insecurity for the Soul. This can lead the Soul to ‘believe’ that life or people in general are dangerous or hostile. Given that early experiences are internalized, the Soul can believe in some cases it deserves rejection and abuse because of something being inherently wrong or evil in its own nature (this could be the case with Jupiter 4th House Scorpio, ruled by Pluto in Virgo conjunct Mars in Virgo being the ruler of the 9th House). These beliefs can at some point become expressed by means of Mercury linguistic propositions. Though, they can also exist as such beliefs without manifesting through words. These types of beliefs as in the example don’t necessarily form a ‘system’.
Here I have a first question, Rad. Are there -as it seems to me- unconscious beliefs?
If beliefs can be unconscious, and further, if we can have beliefs which don’t form a system, a next question is: can a Soul have fragmented beliefs, disconnected beliefs, or contradictory beliefs?
In the Jupiter Scorpio example with Jupiter being in the 4th House, the Soul can have a simultaneous unconscious belief that people in general are giving, honest and wise or defined by natural law and that life, as a result, is nurturing and secure. This would originate in prior lifetimes in which the Soul were born through families or mother figures which were defined by these natural orientations.
Same time, these ‘disconnected’ unconscious beliefs could relate to aspects of the individual personality or psyche (4rth House, Scorpio) which have been unintegrated in the past and/or present lifetime, which have created the necessary experiences for integration to occur.
In the example, the ‘extremes’ in these types of experiences that have lead to co-existing and unintegrated generalizations of truth, could have manifested in past lives where the Soul embraced belief systems based on duality, such as manicheism, implying good and evil, black and white, as definite states instead as evolving states. This could have occurred as a result of alienation (Jupiter) from the own emotional life and the own psychological dynamics, resulting in desires to compensate and or the creation polarization and distortions of the self-image.
Based on the example, beliefs are conditioned by the types of direct experience the Soul has been attracted to in order to expand or evolve beyond its pre-existing understanding or pre-existing beliefs. Thus, the natal Jupiter archetype (in relation to the evolutionary axis and the overall natal signature) reflects:
* Pre-existing beliefs or understanding, and prior belief systems that have been promoting the Soul’s expansion of awareness
* Types of past lives experiences which have directly induced the prior understanding and beliefs
* Types of experiences the Soul will continue to gravitate to in order to learn more about the nature of reality in a way consistent with the Soul intentions to expand its awareness
* Nature of belief systems the Soul can gravitate to in order to promote these lessons.
Now, I have some trouble making a clear distinction between Jupiter and Mercury functions. Mercury correlates with the construction of a world of objects through linear arrangement of phenomenal reality from the observer’s relative point of view. It correlates with the thought and language forms that result from this linear arrangement or construction. Further, it relates to the types of information the Soul needs to find, by means of such linear arrangements of thought and language and the resulting communication patterns. How they have occurred in past and present lifetimes. Mercury reflects the impact of information taken from whatever environment-observation, communication, opinions, books, etc. including information and opinions about beliefs, knowledge, the nature of phenomena, and truth. A same proposition or statement could be either an opinion or a belief, depending on how invested the Soul is in such statement. Some Souls seem to simply believe in whatever opinions. An intention of the Mercury archetype would be to create distinctions between what the Soul knows, and what it does not know, and the natal Mercury archetype, in relation with the evolutionary axis and the overall natal signature would reflect the types of information the Soul needs to find in order to feed the Jupiter intention of ‘knowing’ what it needs to know in order to expand and evolve its understanding. However, in some cases a Soul could be directed to some types of ‘books’ based on the natal Jupiter archetype. In the example, the Scorpio Mercury could be attracted to psychological written material in order to promote the intention of psychological/emotional self-knowledge. Would in such case the natal Mercury intend to make this intention more specific, ie. what type of information within the field of psychology will allow the Soul to understand or learn what it needs to learn? … where and how it needs to find this type of information? … what type of intellectual approach is needed for this to occur?
I’m sorry for the disconnectedness of these questions. Also, I feel more questions will arise while advancing on this.
